Live from CES: Sharp Looks “Beyond 4K”; Intros $750 UHD Set

Sharp’s CES press event featured the unveiling of a new TV that Sharp calls “Beyond 4K” as it takes the company’s Quattron technology and applies it to 4K resolution to create 66 million subpixels which is 42 million more than a standard 4K set.

“It has 167 percent greater resolution than 4K and approaches 8K resolution,” said Jim Sanduski, Sharp Electronics Marketing Company of America, president. “It also has an upscaler to upconvert all content so it can take advantage of the resolution.”

The use of Quattron as well as Sharp Spectros technology enables it to display 100% of the digital cinema initiative color space to ensure uniform and high-level of technical performance and quality.

The company also introduced three new lines of UHD TV sets ranging in sizes from 43-inches to 80-inches and beginning at a price point of around $750, setting a new low price point for consumers looking to experience 4K content.

The lineup begins with the entry-level UB30 series with screen sizes of 43-, 50-, 55- and 65-inches. A step up is the UE30 series, with screen sizes of 60-, 70-, and 80-inches and with features like AquoDimming that individually controls each pixel. And at the top end is the UH30 series of two sets that measure 70- and 80-inches and include THX4K certification. To earn this stamp of approval, the UH30 TVs will have passed more than 400 picture quality tests to ensure that every pixel delivers precisely the scene the director intended.

Also look for a new “super slim” TV that measures 70-inches diagonal but also is only half-an-inch thick.
