Comcast Taps Elemental Technologies to Support Advanced DVR Services

Elemental Technologies announced that Comcast has selected its video processing software to power encoding for the X1 DVR with cloud technology.

“Video infrastructure is moving rapidly to IP and to software-defined video solutions running in virtualized environments on customer’s own networks,” said Dan Marshall, senior vice president of worldwide sales for Elemental. “As Comcast continues to expand its X1 DVR service and sets a new bar for consumer experiences, Elemental software will enable rapid market launches.”

Xfinity on the X1 Entertainment Operating System is a cloud-based platform that has set the bar for what a home entertainment experience should be; one that transcends traditional TV to deliver an immersive and personalized entertainment experience across all devices, with the best navigation, search and discovery. Last year, Comcast began offering customers the X1 DVR with cloud technology, which lets customers record TV shows and movies in the Comcast cloud to enjoy in the home or on-the-go across devices. While in the home, X1 DVR with cloud technology allows customers to turn every device into a TV, providing access to the program guide and nearly the entire channel lineup, as well as the entire Xfinity On Demand library.

“Software-defined video processing solutions from Elemental have served us very well for On Demand applications,” said Jason Press, senior vice president of software engineering and operations for Comcast. “Elemental’s use of Linux OS, REST-based APIs, and its integration with Cisco UCS hardware, has improved our ability to quickly deploy our X1 DVR cloud-based services sourced from live channel lineups.”
