NURAY Digital Digitizes, Restores Valuable Sports Content

The Sports Video Group is pleased to welcome NURAY Digital as a corporate sponsor. Based in Bluffton, SC, the media-preservation company specializes in the conservation, preservation, and restoration of film and tape collections. Its engineers customize digitization, storage, compression, and retrieval solutions for accessibility of media content.

Featuring an experienced team of archivists, state-of-the-art facilities, and a strong pipeline of legacy equipment, NURAY Digital consistently delivers extraordinary results on even the most challenging digitization projects. Customer-focused and dedicated exclusively to archiving, the company listens to its clients and provides only the services needed while delivering superior results.

“The sports-production and -broadcasting industry is home to millions of hours of sports content. If this significant record of American sports history is to stand the test of time, the preservation of this footage is vital,” says Co-CEO Rick Ray. “As founders of RAYCOM Sports [now RAYCOM Media] and producers of more than 10,000 hours of live programming —including sports, entertainment, and educational programming — we understand the value in this content. We are proud to be an SVG sponsor and look forward to working with this community to preserve this extraordinary content.”

NURAY Digital is currently working with WRAL-TV Raleigh, NC, to digitize its vast library of content, which spans four decades and comprises thousands of hours of sports programming. For years, the content has been contained on DVC, ¾-in., and MII videotapes in WRAL-TV’s storage room, with limited accessibility by staff. In a massive digitization project, NURAY is taking all the content from these deteriorating tapes and cleaning, repairing, digitizing, and transferring all footage to new media.

Thousands of hours of sports content — games, tournaments, interviews, and other footage — will now be digitally available, opening up a world of possibilities for repurposing this vintage content.

“This is programming content that will be invaluable in ways we have not even begun to dream of for broadcast and Internet delivery,” says Jim Goodmon, CEO, Capitol Broadcasting, which owns WRAL-TV. “We spent millions to make it; why should we not put it to work?”

Since 2010, universities, broadcast stations, nonprofits, corporations, and government have trusted NURAY to migrate their media content.
