Crew Providing Spanish Audio for Newscasts [video]

KRGV in Rio Grande Valley, TX has a behind-the-scenes look at the team providing Spanish audio for CHANNEL 5 newscasts. The use of the secondary audio channel to provide live Spanish translations is a historic step in local television news.

CHANNEL 5 NEWS hired around 15 translators and announcers to provide the service.

KRGV General Manager John Kittleman said, “We were told that folks did not want a second newscast. They didn’t want it on a second channel or another time. They wanted our newscast when it airs but with the translation.”

The team providing live Spanish translations is under the direction of KRGV News Director Jenny Martinez with Ramon Rodriguez as the coordinator.

“We have some of the best of the best in the industry. It’s a lot of stress, a lot of sleepless night, a lot of e-mails at three in the morning. But I love it,” said Rodriguez.

Manny Lopez came out of retirement to join the historic venture. He previously worked with the Astros and Oilers.
