Sports Illustrated Launches New Ultra-Customizable SI App

Time Inc.’s Sports Illustrated has launched the new SI App, a new mobile platform for SI’s original sports content that includes new modes of personalization, a clean in-app navigation experience, and a distinct SI editorial curation, along with all the live reporting, scores, stats, videos, notifications and up-to-the-minute news.

si-app_updatedMobile sports fans can now get the expert analysis, inside access, scoops and award-winning storytelling from SI’s Peter King, Tom Verducci, Lee Jenkins, Richard Deitsch, Grant Wahl, Seth Davis and many more delivered straight to their devices as soon as it’s published.

“With this new and improved entry point to the brand, we’ve opened the door to a whole new group of mobile sports fans — and added a new way for the millions of existing loyal SI fans — to engage with the great content and beautiful visuals that SI produces daily, in a custom-tailored way,” said SI Group Editor Paul Fichtenbaum.

This release marks the latest step in SI’s digital evolution, as the SI App is the brand’s first native multi-sport application to present all the original SI sports content in one place. This new platform has been developed to serve the intelligent sports fan with an experience that is simple, quick, informative and intuitive.

“We’re very excited to introduce this product that we believe stacks up against and outperforms all other sports apps on the market in a way that only SI can provide,” says Patty Hirsch, Digital GM of the SI Group. “We’re eager for our fans to start using the app and look forward to continuing to expand and evolve the product in the future.”

Pin live games as you browse the app
This feature allows users to pin a live score tile of any available game to a user selected location on the screen in order to follow live action while simultaneously browsing the latest stories and headlines. At any point, a user can click once on the scoreboard tile to return to the detailed game view.

This new multitasking feature allows users to continue watching clips as they explore the app with SI’s unique video presentation.

The 10 Spot
This new editorially curated section that brings readers the top 10 things in sports they need to know right now. The 10 Spot will feature stories, videos and galleries, including tapping into the vast history of SI storytelling and iconic imagery via the SI Vault to present contextually relevant content based on the news of the day.

“We wanted to create an experience that first and foremost is fast, clean and easy to use and at the same time really highlights one of SI’s greatest strengths and points of differentiation, which is its one-of-a-kind editorial talent and original content,” says SI’s head of product, Krys Krycinski. “We’re excited to introduce an app that accomplishes all of these things and also provides all the functionality any sports fan would want in terms of live scoring, information, news and alerts while at the same time adding some unique new features.”

The launch of the SI App is the latest in a series of sports initiatives from Time Inc.’s Sports Illustrated Group. In January, the Group introduced a fully responsive and redesigned SiKids.com, and in 2015 the company acquired the FanSided network of 300+ blogs; and it created Sports Illustrated Play, a new company devoted to youth sports, and Campus Rush, a new college sports site devoted to all things college football. The brand has also launched SI Films and SI Overtime, a new branded-content studio.
