Venue News: Redskins’ Architect Unveils Stadium Design With Moat; Los Angeles Considers Temporary Venues in Olympic Bid

Washington Redskins owner Daniel Snyder doesn’t know where the future home of his football team will be but he’s already got an idea of what he wants it to look like, writes The Washington Post. Danish architecture firm Bjarke Ingels Group, hired recently by Snyder to design a new stadium for the team, unveiled a model of the proposed project recently to 60 Minutes. The images released by the program show a semi-transparent hyperbolic paraboloid-shaped stadium surrounded by a moat for kayakers…

…With an array of stadiums and arenas already in place across Los Angeles, officials bidding for the 2024 Summer Olympics have turned their focus to temporary facilities that might be needed, writes the Los Angeles Times. Current plans include an elevated track built over the football field at the Coliseum and a proposal to temporarily convert Figueroa Street into a miles-long promenade for pedestrians and bicyclists. …A dollar might not buy what it used to, but $50 million can still set up a grandiose new high school football stadium in the Lone Star State, writes KHOU. The connected facilities are expected to cost approximately $50.5 million, nearly one-quarter of the total $220 million outlay being proposed in McKinney’s forthcoming bond proposal; other funds will facility upgrades, renovations at the middle and elementary schools and land acquisition and planning for a new elementary school in the town…

…The Arizona Coyotes are set to announce their plans for a new arena in April, and that new arena will likely be built in one of two areas in the East Valley, sources tell ABC15. Coyotes ownership has gathered three viable options for an arena outside Glendale, where they currently play. The two likeliest scenarios are a joint arena in Tempe with the Arizona State University hockey team, which made the jump to the NCAA Division I level in 2015-16, or an arena within the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community in Scottsdale…

…The big, red Sports Authority Field signs hanging on the Broncos’ stadium remain big, red question marks, writes The Denver Post. Days into its bankruptcy, the giant sporting goods retailer is trying to speed through its Chapter 11 on two, highly detailed tracks: reorganize or sell by the end of April. But whether Englewood-based Sports Authority plans to keep, scrap, or sell the stadium naming-rights deal it assumed from Invesco Ltd. has yet to be declared.
