NHL Network Nets Audio Gold by Miking Players During All-Star Weekend

Network deploys Quantum 5X player microphones to give viewers an inside listen at the fun

America’s Funniest Home Videos is in for some serious competition if NHL Studios keeps putting microphones on its players. The NHL Network’s postproduction facility has been putting together episodes of Mic’d Up, clips from the NHL 2017 All-Star weekend. Here are some classic clips, with audio sourced through Quantum 5X Player Mics.

This first clip underscores how well hidden the microphones can be on hockey players’ armor: at the :45-second mark, P.K. Subban, Brad Marchand, Patrick Kane, and Shea Weber are playing an ad hoc(key) game of “Find the Microphone” during the Skills competition:

The next clip spotlights the “2017 NHL All-Star Game Mic’d Up” and chronicles the event from the pregame locker room to postgame handshakes.

The real eye-opener, though, is watching musician Justin Beiber rip it up on the ice during the Celebrity Game. At 5 ft. 9 in. (thank you, TMZ mug shot), he’s no enforcer, but he gets some stuff past the bigger boys in this clip.
