Level 3 Continues to Expand its Network in Latin America

1,000 Additional Kilometers Added to IP and Metro Network in 2016

Global telecommunications provider Level 3 Communications, Inc.  expanded its Latin American Internet Protocol (IP) and metro network to 26,000 kilometers in 2016. Main expansions took place in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Panama and Peru. The Company also upgraded its existing nodes and data centers throughout the region.


In 2016, Level 3 completed various expansions of its metropolitan network in Buenos Aires and long-haul network with an extension of its San Luis to Cordoba route.
Its IT infrastructure was updated and expanded, offering a more efficient management of its telecommunications equipment. In addition, Level 3 unified the way in which equipment, energy and events management is visualized in nodes and data centers, ensuring that all aspects of infrastructure are identified almost immediately.


Level 3 carried out expansions in its global IP and metropolitan network in the cities of Belo Horizonte, Brasilia, Curitiba, Porto Alegre, Salvador, São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. And capillarity was also extended with IP services to new cities such as Alphaville, Joinville, Mogi Mirim and Seropedica.
Level 3 expanded its long-distance networks between Cotia-Curitiba, Cotia-Belo Horizonte, Cotia-Campinas, Campinas-Hortolandia and Belo Horizonte-Rio de Janeiro. These additional sub-loops strengthen route diversity, further fortifying business continuity disaster recovery capabilities, providing businesses with a complete fiber path, additional route diversity and increased capacity.


A network expansion was completed on the Bogotá metropolitan network and its long-haul network in the Cali-Bogotá-Medellin-Cali ring.


The metropolitan network was expanded with connectivity to the Transelectric data center.


Level 3’s long distance network was expanded in the Mexican cities of Monterrey, Mexico City and Guadalajara, in addition to the International long-haul network from Monterrey to McAllen, Texas (U.S.).

Level 3 expanded its fiber optic infrastructure in Panama, generating increased service availability to its subsea cable system network.

Data Center and Node Upgrades:

Level 3 continued to invest in its data center expansions in Cotia and Rio de Janeiro in Brazil; Santiago and Valparaiso, Chile; Cali, Colombia and Lima, Peru. The expansions were conducted to meet the increasing customer demand for greater space with secure and controlled energy flow and cooling systems.
The company expanded the Vyvx node in Ciudad de Mexico and is adding new nodes in additional cities in Mexico during 2017.
A new Vyvx node service was added in Quito, Ecuador.
Additionally, energy and control systems for monitoring were implemented in various nodes throughout Latin America. More than 53 nodes were optimized with energy saving equipment, more efficient air conditioners that take up less space. As a result of the recent improvements, increased space was created allowing for more availability and a greater footprint than before.
