University of Oklahoma Adopts At-Home Workflows With Help From LiveU
The University of Oklahoma Video and Media Services team produces content for on-campus and off-campus academic and sporting events throughout the year. The full-service crew has the skills and the equipment to produce live streaming video, school commercials and even documentaries. The team adopt ed an At-Home Production solution to cover away games that would typically be missed by students, parents, and alumni. LiveU technology is at the center of the solution.
At-Home Production is sweeping the live sports industry as it allows producers to drastically reduce costs by producing live shows from a centralized studio control room instead of using an onsite production truck and satellite uplink. The University of Oklahoma is sending multiple LiveU transmission units with camera operators to cover away games, then leveraging the school’s existing studio infrastructure to take in the live camera feeds, switch the show, and add graphics, replays, and other video for distribution to Center Sports TV, the digital home of OU athletics, local stations and regional sports networks such as Fox Sports Oklahoma.
“At-Home Production allows us to cover certain sports like track and field and away games that may not typically be covered by broadcasters,” notes Brandon Meier, Broadcast Operations Director, The University of Oklahoma. “We recently produced a live golf broadcast using eight LiveU backpacks, traveling with the OU team around the 18 holes. Without this technology, it would be impossible to produce these events from a cost and infrastructure standpoint.”
“A lot of people think they can’t afford the technology. They are intimidated by the costs. In reality, it’s one of the more affordable tools that we use,” added Meier.
The school plans to expand its use of LiveU technology for At-Home Productions during pre-game shows and other sporting events in the coming school year.
