CBC Sports, the Calgary Stampede Extends Media Rights Agreement Through 2019

The current media rights agreement between CBC Sports and the Calgary Stampede has been extended through 2019. The extension ensures that CBC Sports will continue to provide broadcast and streaming coverage of ‘The Greatest Outdoor Show On Earth’ over the next two years on television and online at cbcsports.ca and via the CBC Sports app for iOS and Android devices. Coverage includes the Stampede Parade, daily Rodeo and Rangeland Derby competition over the 10-day event as well as digital and broadcast features that delve into the cultural impact of the Calgary Stampede.

CBC Sports first provided coverage of the Calgary Stampede in 1960, having reached millions of viewers in the years since including international audiences via streaming video at cbcsports.ca. The current agreement between CBC Sports and the Calgary Stampede began in 2016.

“We are pleased to continue our long-term partnership with CBC, who has helped connect Canadians with the excitement and community spirit of the Calgary Stampede,” says Karen Connellan, director, programming, Calgary Stampede. “We look forward to continuing working with CBC to showcase our programs and events to audiences across our nation.”

“The Calgary Stampede is an iconic cultural event enjoyed by Canadian and international viewers every summer and we are pleased to continue to provide multi-platform coverage over the next two years,” says Greg Stremlaw, executive director, CBC Sports, and general manager, Olympics. “The Calgary Stampede has been a great partner to CBC Sports for many years and we look forward to continuing our work together.”

CBC Sports has also reached an agreement with Sportsnet to extend their current broadcast agreement through 2019 that will see Sportsnet ONE continue to provide daily Rodeo and Rangeland Derby competition coverage and late-night encore coverage through the first eight days of the Calgary Stampede.

In addition to the annual 10-day celebration featuring midway rides and bucking broncos, the Calgary Stampede is a gathering place that hosts, educates, and entertains visitors from around the world with the goal of preserving and celebrating western heritage, culture, and community spirit. The 2018 Calgary Stampede will run from July 6–15.
