Snapchat Spectacles to Make Grand Slam Debut at 2017 US Open

Snapchat Spectacles will make their Grand Slam debut at the 2017 US Open next week. Snapchat Spectacles will give US Open fans the ability to share their tennis stories through their own viewpoints via the HD filming sunglasses – with the images they film able to be shared on Snapchat. Spectacles can be purchased starting Saturday, Aug. 26, during Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day, and throughout the tournament from Aug. 28 – Sept. 10. The Spectacles will be delivered on-site to fans by Snapbots, minion-looking vending machines that will dispense the glasses.

“Our objective with this campaign is to encourage fans to organically share their US Open experience,” says USTA Chief Marketing Officer Amy Choyne. “Spectacles give a one-of-a-kind vantage point because they capture your memories just the way you see them.”

To mark the debut of the Snapchat Spectacles, on Saturday the Snapbots made their way to the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center by sea, land and air. Along for the ride was reigning US Open women’s doubles champion Bethanie Mattek-Sands, who amplified the content sharing and snapped with Spectacles from an NYONAIR helicopter carrying one of the Snapbots.

“We strive to surprise and delight visitors to the US Open, while reshaping and enhancing the way fans can share their on-site experience,” says USTA Director of Social Media & Strategy Qianna Smith-Bruneteau. “Spectacles offers fans a new sense of discoverability of our grounds in a fresh content format.”
