AES NY 2017: Sony Offers Preview of Hi-Res Mics

Sony Electronics’ Pro Audio Division (Booth 848) is showing prototypes of three new high-resolution microphones. Designed for professional-studio and home-recording applications, the new hi-res microphones are capable of extended frequency response to 50 kHz.

The new models build on Sony’s studio-microphone heritage and continue its recent development of Hi-Res audio products. The C-100 side-address mic is optimized for vocal use, and the two end-address models (the cardioid ECM-100U and the omnidirectional ECM-100N) are ideal for instruments. With a high-frequency response up to 50 kHz, high sensitivity, and a body structure that prevents acoustic vibration, the new microphones offer unrivaled sound quality.

Ideal for vocal applications, the C-100 side address supports hi-res recording (～50 kHz）in an ultra-compact package. Its two-way structure incorporates newly developed capsules with variable directivity that deliver a wide frequency response of 20 Hz to 50kHz. A selectable pick-up pattern (omni/uni/bi) supports a wide variety of recording applications. Its two-part metallic body structure based on the C-800G mic prevents acoustic vibration, resulting in low noise and clear sound. Low-cut filter eliminates low-frequency noise and proximity effect. A 10-dB pad switch provides added headroom.

ECM-100U, ECM-100N Mics
Ideal for instrument applications, the end-address mics are ultra-compact with a choice of two models: the unidirectional ECM-100U and omnidirectional ECM-100N). Flat and wide frequency response (20 Hz to 50 kHz) is suited to hi-res recording. A low-cut filter eliminates low-frequency noise and proximity effect, and a -10-dB pad switch provides added headroom/

The new mics expand Sony’s High-Resolution Audio line, which comprises a complete series of solutions designed to ensure that music enthusiasts can enjoy hi-res digital music with the type of sound quality available on LPs and CDs.

These new products complement Sony’s full line of professional-audio technologies including the MDR Series of headphones, wireless microphone systems, and portable field recorders.
