SVG Europe Training Advisor David Crawford To Take ‘Distance Learning’ To Extremes With Charity Trek

SVG Europe has an ongoing activity to help its members – both big and small – to find the right training solutions for their staff, so that companies can develop and maintain their businesses successfully in the sports video marketplace.  In particular, new apprenticeship training programmes, work-based/distance learning opportunities and fast-track degree courses are being investigated by members of the Board.

However, it seems that SVG Europe’s Training Advisor, Professor David Crawford from the Universities of Essex and Ravensbourne, is set to take the concept of distance learning to a new extreme with news that he has signed up to do a trek in ‘Darkest Peru’ (to quote Paddington Bear) over the Easter holiday.

David and a group of stout (but not by the time they return!) colleagues are going to trek and camp for a week in Peru, as they ascend the trail from the ancient capital of Cuzco to the Sun Gate of the sacred mountain-top site of Machu Picchu. Here he hopes to learn some of the hidden secrets of the Inca culture, and why Machu Picchu was abandoned even before the invading Spanish arrived in Peru. At present, David is partaking in an intensive training programme for the trek, by walking up and down the innumerable stairs at Ravensbourne in-between lectures, rather than using the lift.

The trek is being organised by Global Media, home to some of the UK’s best-loved radio stations such as Heart, Capital and Classic FM. Global’s Make Some Noise campaign supports a number of brilliant, small charities, which help youngsters and their families living with illness, disability or lack of opportunity.

During the trek, SVG Europe’s intrepid explorer is planning to upload a daily blog to a website (apparently this can be achieved “via the Incanet”, says Crawford), and a tracking signal for the journey, using a special satellite phone generously supplied by an Ipswich-based company, two10degrees, who are experts in global messaging. Two10degrees have previously worked on collaborative research projects with David and the University of Essex, and are keen to sponsor him as far away as possible…!
