NBC Sports Names Matt Murphy as New SVP/GM of NBC Sports Bay Area & California

NBC Sports Regional Networks named Matt Murphy SVP and General Manager of NBC Sports Bay Area & California, effective January 2, 2019. He is responsible for the networks, their multiplatform content, and relationships as the league’s local sports networks of the San Francisco Giants, Golden State Warriors, Oakland A’s, Sacramento Kings, San Jose Earthquakes, and San Jose Sharks.

The announcement was made by Bill Bridgen, President, Group Leader, NBC Sports Regional Networks, to whom Murphy will report.

“As we continue to put fans first and strive to serve them with the most engaging content across all platforms, it became clear that Matt’s expertise and leadership in this space made him the ideal candidate to take these networks to the next level,” says Bridgen.

Previously, Murphy served as Senior Vice President, Platforms and Strategy for NBC Sports Regional Networks. He was responsible for the digital platform strategy for the RSNs, product development, and revenue growth from advertising, direct-to-consumer services, and partnerships. Most recently, Murphy led the launch of the MyTeams by NBC Sports app, a team-centric app for the 25 pro teams covered by the RSNs.

Murphy is a 20-year sales and marketing veteran from Disney and ESPN Media Networks. Most recently, he served as SVP of Digital Video Distribution, and led a national sales and marketing team for distribution strategies across all non-linear platforms, including YouTube, Xbox, and Netflix.

Prior to joining NBC Sports Group, he consulted with Google and Revolt TV, where he helped his clients develop monetization and distribution strategies.

Murphy graduated from Washington and Lee University with a bachelor’s degree in European history. He and his wife have three children. A Connecticut native, Murphy and his family will relocate to the Bay Area.
