Sony Names Theresa Alesso Division President, Imaging Products and Solutions, Pro; Intros NAB Show Theme

The HDC-3500 system camera will be among the products exhibited at NAB 2019

Sony’s pre-NAB 2019 press conference revealed its “Live Your Vision” theme as well as some company management changes. Theresa Alesso will take over as division president of Sony Electronics, Imaging Products and Solutions, Pro, on April 1, replacing Katsunori Yamanouchi, president of Sony Professional Solutions Americas, who will return to Japan at the end of this month.

Theresa Alesso will take over as division president of Sony Electronics, Imaging Products and Solutions, on April 1.

Neal Manowitz has been named deputy president, Imaging Products and Solutions, and John Studdert remains VP, media segment, Sony Electronics, Imaging Products and Solutions.

Yamanouchi kicked off the event by touching on some of the key themes for Sony at the 2019 NAB Show, including the tagline “Live Your Vision.”

“We respect the vision of professionals and creators, listen to their voice, and develop products to enable them,” he said. “We always want to be a driving force behind creative professionals so they can enhance their storytelling capabilities.”

Sony’s ongoing efforts focus on two core areas: how to enrich content with resolution, HDR, wide color gamut, and high frame rate; and leveraging IP and cloud-based AI via Sony’s Intelligent Media Services to drive workflow efficiencies.

“We’ve added automation, AI, and machine learning to the Intelligent Media Solutions as we are finding that almost every aspect of the business is looking for automated workflows,” said Studdert. “We are [coordinating our products] to allow customers to work today and then repurpose equipment as they move to the next stage of operations. Change management needs to happen, but they also need to realize efficiencies today to keep the business running.”

The HDC-3500 camera features a 2/3-in. 4K CMOS sensor.

NAB 2019 attendees will also get to take a look at the HDC-3500 system camera, which Sony says brings new levels of image quality, portability, and creative flexibility to live-production environments via the use of the 2/3-in. 4K CMOS sensor. The sensor allows the HDC-3500 to capture 4K images with exceptionally low noise (-62 dB), sensitivity of F10 at 1080/59.94p or F11 at 1080/50p, and high dynamic range, while achieving the ITU-R BT.2020 broadcast-standard wide color space. With a less expensive CCU than other options from Sony, it provides a good value for mid-level productions that are fine running over a 3-Gbps link. The 3-Gbps link limits output to 1080/50p, whereas the use of 12-Gbps SDI or quad 3-Gbps SDI interfaces in the CCU open up 4K possibilities.
