Telemundo Deportes Headlines 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup, Copa America With Lineup of Commentators

Telemundo Deportes, the exclusive Spanish-language home of the FIFA Women’s World Cup France 2019 and 2019 Copa America, kicked off the countdown to “Summer of Soccer” with the announcement of its team of commentators and analysts for this summer’s tournaments, as well as the latest production and multiplatform content updates. Telemundo Deportes’ coverage to offer extensive multimedia coverage with more than 750+ hours of LIVE sports programming including 78 matches in 31 days on two continents across the Telemundo Network, its cable channel Universo, and the Telemundo Deportes and NBC Sports apps in Spanish.

“Last summer was a historic moment for our company as we geared up to present Telemundo’s first-ever Men’s World Cup, establishing Telemundo Deportes as the brand and destination for the Biggest, Best Global Sports in Spanish-language,” says Ray Warren, President of Telemundo Deportes. “This summer, Telemundo and NBCUniversal will once again double down on our commitment as we simultaneously present the FIFA Women’s World Cup France and Copa America, renewing our pledge to deliver the most authentic, highest quality coverage.”

Telemundo Deportes’ digital platforms will extend match coverage with more than 800 short-form pieces of content including highlights and original series to be featured across TelemundoDeportes.com, Telemundo Deportes app, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube. In addition, the content will be tailored for special linear TV segments and Telemundo’s VOD platforms.

As part of the digital coverage, Telemundo Deportes will launch a late-night live show on Twitter which will be produced by the NBCUniversal Digital Lab, to stream twice a week during “Summer of Soccer.” The show will highlight and celebrate the key moments, stories, and conversations behind the tournaments. This series will not only cover the action on the pitch but will take things further into the culture and social conversations behind these tournaments. The show will begin streaming the first week of June on Telemundo Deportes’ Twitter.

Five-time Emmy Award winner Andrés Cantor will spearhead the summer of soccer coverage as Chief Commentator, undertaking a unique role by simultaneously leading and delivering the action of two different tournaments, taking place on different sides of the world and featuring some of the best global soccer stars. He will be joined by Telemundo Deportes’ renowned group of commentators and soccer experts, including Ana Jurka, Miguel Gurwitz, Carlos Hermosillo, Sammy Sadovnik, Manuel Sol, Copán Álvarez, Karim Mendiburu, and Erasmo Provenza.

Live action coverage of all the matches will be complemented with pre- and post-show analysis. In addition, Telemundo Deportes’ long-running and highest-rated Spanish-language sports and entertainment studio show, Titulares y Más, will extend to a one-hour special edition throughout the tournaments, beginning June 7. Hosted by Karim Mendiburu, who will anchor the show from Miami with participation from Paris by Jurka, Titulares y Más will wrap up the day and look ahead at the action of the following day.

As the exclusive Spanish-language home of the tournament, Telemundo Deportes will present all 52 matches live on Telemundo, Universo, and the Telemundo Deportes and NBC Sports apps in Spanish. Twenty-one matches will air on Telemundo, doubling the 2015 coverage and featuring the most-ever Women’s World Cup matches on Spanish-language television. Twenty-four matches will air on Universo and seven will exclusively air on Telemundo Deportes’ digital platforms.

Telemundo Deportes’ broadcast of the Women’s World Cup will include extensive, compelling coverage around the action, following the most relevant teams with a close focus on the U.S. Women’s National Team (USWNT) and the teams that are of most importance to the audience.

In addition to Titulares y Más, the match coverage will be surrounded by special pre/post coverage for select matches including a 60-minute preview show on Opening Day and for the Final match.

On the digital front, all matches will be available in Spanish on Telemundo Deportes digital platforms, including the Telemundo Deportes and NBC Sports apps. Digital coverage will include exclusive short- and long-form content on TelemundoDeportes.com and social media platforms that highlights the tournament, players, teams, stats, match highlights, host cities, and the culture of France.

As part of the digital coverage plans, and in partnership with NBC Sports’ On Her Turf, Telemundo Deportes presents Off the Pitch, a 10-episode video series focused on current and former USWNT players’ lives outside of their playing careers. The series will launch in May leading up to Opening Day and will be available via On Her Turf, NBC Sports and Telemundo social and digital platforms. Off the Pitch will cover the female athletes’ playing days, their lives as women in sports, interests they pursue off the pitch, as well as their thoughts about the upcoming FIFA Women’s World Cup and what the phrase “on her turf” means to them.

On Her Turf is a media partnership between Refinery29 and NBC Sports that shares in the celebration and amplification of women in sports. The @OnHerTurf Instagram account encourages users “to be the best version of yourself, both on and off the field.”

Leading up to the tournament, Telemundo Deportes is also presenting a series of interviews featuring more than 50 current soccer stars who are anticipated to participate in the FIFA Women’s World Cup this summer. These interviews are featured on Titulares y Más and across all Telemundo Deportes’ digital platforms leading up to kick-off.

In addition, a special Que Momento episode dedicated to the story behind the USWNT and their journey to become the most successful international women’s soccer team in the world. The one-hour documentary will air on June 2 on Telemundo.

During 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup, Telemundo Deportes will be based in Paris with a host position featuring views of the Eiffel Tower and Arc de Triomphe, bringing together a strong lineup of soccer commentators and analysts to lead the network’s coverage.

Jurka will serve as host based in Paris, alongside Carlota Vizmanos, who has been part of Telemundo Deportes’ coverage of FIFA events since 2017. Joining them from Miami will be two renowned women in soccer who will serve as game and studio analysts, bringing their expertise and experience in the field to the coverage: Deyna Castellanos, Venezuelan player and one of the most recognized young stars having been a finalist for the Best FIFA Women’s Player; and Amelia Valverde who currently serves as the head coach of Costa Rica’s Women’s National Team.

Telemundo Deportes is also bringing back Viviana Vila who made history last summer as the first woman to ever provide commentary in Spanish for a Men’s World Cup. The distinguished team of Telemundo Deportes experts will round out the commentators and analysts that will call all the matches of the tournament.

Dedicated crews will also be traveling across France, following the teams with special emphasis on the U.S. Women’s National Team.

Telemundo Deportes will present exclusive Spanish-language coverage of all 26 matches live with 21 matches being broadcasted on Telemundo and 4 matches on Universo.

In addition to live match coverage, Telemundo will feature a pre- and post-game show providing viewers with in-depth analysis for most games that will be complemented by nightly recaps on Titulares y Mas. The news coverage also includes special, extended shows previewing the Opening Match, Semi-Finals, and the Final on July 7.

All coverage will be available in Spanish on Telemundo Deportes digital platforms, including the Telemundo Deportes and NBC Sports apps, ensuring the most robust viewing experience for all soccer fans. Telemundo Deportes’ digital platforms will also be in Brazil producing extensive content that includes recaps, highlights, social media reactions, and short-form original content.

As part of the digital offerings, Telemundo Deportes will debut its first-ever animated series that features some of the most popular players like Messi and Neymar, in a “Conmebol” mall getting all they need before heading to Copa America. Titled Conmebol Shopping Mall, the show will bring a comedic angle to soccer and Telemundo Deportes’ coverage of the tournament.

Telemundo will be covering all angles of the 2019 Copa America with a dedicated production team based in the heart of Rio de Janeiro, and a host position featuring stunning views from Copacabana.

Telemundo Deportes’ Gurwitz, Hermosillo and 1986 FIFA World Cup champion, Argentine Claudio Borghi, will serve as the hosts of Copa America, bringing viewers the latest news and updates each day from Rio. Telemundo Deportes’ talent will be joined by some of the soccer experts from last summer and represent some of the countries participating in 2019 Copa America to lend a unique “on-the-pitch” perspective to the commentating team.

These experts include: one of Uruguay’s greatest players of all time, Diego Forlán; World Cup champion having played alongside former Mexican soccer player and coach, Jesús “Chucho” Ramirez; Argentinean soccer star, Juan Pablo Sorin; former Colombian National Team player, Juan Pablo Angel; former Uruguayan striker, Sebastian Abreu; and former Mexican soccer referee, Marco Antonio Rodriguez.

In addition. dedicated crews will also be traveling across the other four host cities — Belo Horizonte, São Paulo, Porto Alegre. and Salvador. Crews will be following the top participating teams while capturing the dynamic culture and vibrant colors of Brazil.
