MLB 2019 Preview: Twitter Puts Fans in Control With Daily Vote on Live-Streamed At-Bats

@MLB will also partner with Twitter on live shows around key events

It’s shaping up to be an exciting — and engaging — summer of baseball on Twitter. The social-media platform that prides itself in owning the live-sports conversation is pushing video to the forefront and putting the controls in the hands of MLB’s biggest fans.

Among the highlights of plans for the new season, Major League Baseball’s primary Twitter handle (@MLB) will hold a vote every day throughout the season for the #MLBTwitterHitter. It will allow fans to pick whose at-bats they would like to see live-streamed on the platform that day.

Also, since everyone digs the long ball, @MLB will put home runs in the spotlight, committing to post near–real-time video highlights of every single home run hit this season. This is the first year that the MLB social team at MLB Advanced Media will undertake this project. The team will also edit together a nightly montage of all the day’s home runs in a single video.

On the live side, @MLB is also planning to broadcast shows exclusively to Twitter later in the season around some tentpole events, including the London Series (June 29-30), the Home Run Derby (July 8), the All-Star Game (July 9), the trade deadline (July 31), and the Postseason (beginning approximately Oct. 1).
