NBC Los Angeles Leverages Teradek’s Bolt 3000 XT for Wireless Transmission During Olympic Skateboard Training

As we get closer to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, skaters around the world are busy training for the very first Olympic skateboarding competition. NBC LA traveled to Vans Off The Wall Skatepark in Huntington Beach to capture world-famous athletes in action as they train for a spot on the U.S. National Team.

To capture the action up close, NBC LA employed a Teradek Bolt 3000 XT to transmit lossless, zero-latency video from camera to the network’s OB van parked outside. From the OB van, the feed was compressed and streamed to NBC’s station where it was produced for Channel 4 local news.

The Bolt 3000 XT allowed NBC’s camera operator to be completely mobile around the skate park, where a long BNC cable would have been a huge safety hazard for athletes and spectators. With this sort of flexibility, the camera operator could capture footage that would have been impossible otherwise.

The Teradek Bolt is a zero-delay wireless video system used by broadcasters, filmmakers, and video professionals to transmit lossless HD video at up to 3000 ft. of range. Bolts operate on the unlicensed 5GHz spectrum and utilize a series of proprietary technologies to produce better colors and sharper images compared to H.264 video systems. Bolts also provide uncompromising wireless performance, ensuring video feeds reach receivers in any environment.

“Breaking news can happen at a moment’s notice, often times in locations where it’s challenging to run video cables back to the truck,” says Jon Landman, VP of Sales, Teradek. “With the Bolt, camera teams have one less thing to worry about, and can enjoy complete maneuverability with the camera. It’s the first affordable, lossless, high-quality video transmission system made for professional broadcasters.”
