Panasonic Varicam 35 Anchors Monday Night Football Promo Featuring Joe Namath

hsc.tv chose the Panasonic Varicam 35 for ESPN’s Monday Night Football Week 2 promo.

Monday Night Football debuted 50 years ago with the New York Jets facing the Cleveland Browns, and Back then, the quarterback for the Jets was none other than ‘Broadway’ Joe Namath.

Director of Photography Bryan Brousseau explained that the concept for the piece was to have Namath reflect on his experiences playing in the first Monday Night Football game while in a luxurious setting that fit his personality and style. The main dining room in the historic New York Athletic Club was chosen for its beautiful decor, ornate ceilings, and plentiful space.

Brousseau used the Varicam 35 because of “the quality and capability of its sensor and the dual ISO capabilities.” He said, “I had a lot of depth to light and not a lot of existing light. The script was going to be on the teleprompter, so I knew I would lose light there as well. I used the AVC Intra 422 codec using V-Log shooting at 4K UHD at 23.98. I knew I would need the additional ISO to make sure we had the F-stop needed. I chose the base ISO of 5000 and dialed it back to 3200. With Minimum grain, we were able to achieve an F-stop of 4 while using the internal ND.6 at 23.98 and 180˚ shutter.”

Brousseau also employed the Varicam 35’s extensive options for perfecting the image. “I used the Panasonic LUT Library for on-set LUTs, and then further tweaked the LUT after the shoot, before I delivered to post.”
