Shure Sets Up Success in Live Musical Performances at the Grammys, Tony Awards, Oscars, and More

Ahead of the 71st Emmy Awards, Shure celebrated the nominees honored in the Best Variety Special (Live) category. Five of the award contenders relied on Shure gear to deliver high-quality audio performances. Various Shure wireless systems, microphones, and personal monitoring systems were selected so that performers had access to products that they know and trust.

The 61st GRAMMY Awards, broadcast live on CBS from the Staples Center in Los Angeles, was a star-studded affair with a total of 18 musical productions. Advised by the GRAMMY production team to use microphones that artists were most comfortable with, performers such as Dolly Parton, Jennifer Lopez, and Diana Ross used the SM58, Axient Digital wireless mics, KSM8, KSM9, and other Shure systems. With so much wireless in use throughout the show, antenna system design and frequency coordination — trademarks of Axient Digital — were critical to ensuring flawless operation.

Live in Front of a Studio Audience: Norman Lear’s “All in The Family” and “The Jeffersons” paid homage to two of Mr. Lear’s most iconic television sitcoms from the 70s. Shure’s cutting-edge gear assisted the audio team in bringing two classic and beloved shows into the 21st century. Producers of the performance, Jimmy Kimmel and Norman Lear, were each outfitted with Shure’s newest lavalier microphone, TwinPlex, for the opening of the show. The broadcast team relied on Axient Digital for clean, dynamic sound and absolute reliability behind Jennifer Hudson’s rousing live version of the theme song from “The Jeffersons,” “Movin’ On Up.”

The 73rd Annual Tony Awards also chose Shure for a complete revamp of the audio performance from previous years. For the first time, the Tonys relied solely on Axient Digital. A total of 57 transmitters, including 32 ADX1Ms were used for host James Corden and the ensemble cast.

Next, The Oscars enabled almost 30 million viewers to hear presenters and performers more clearly, thanks to Shure Axient Digital. Broadcast live from the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, the 91st Academy Awards honored the best films of the past year. The presenters, and a majority of the performers for Best Original Song, performed with Axient Digital.

Lastly, The 76th Annual Golden Globe Awards, broadcast live on NBC from the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, Calif., used the Shure Axient Digital System to manage multiple presenters and performers.
