PRG SmartXcan Thermal Scanner Available; Scans 700 People Per Hour

With live sporting events look to ramp up either with limited attendance or just the teams and limited venue and production teams one of the challenges is doing temperature checks quickly and safely. That is one of the reasons PRG has tapped its fabrication shop in New Windsor, NY to work with German-based security company Kentix on building the SmartXcan thermal scanner tower.

PRG’s SmartXcan accurately measures the temperature of up to 700 people per hour.

“It’s a contactless piece of equipment, is completely portable as it has two wheels on the back and has a battery pack that is good for 24 hours so it can stand alone for a long time,” says Gary Shinn, PRG, senior account executive, broadcast sales. Permanent installations can also be accommodated like mounting on a wall or countertop.

“It can be modified to adapt to the customer’s needs,” says Shinn. “The height can also be customized, and the base and stand can have customized branding.”

The system works by having the subject face the scanner from about 4-12 inches away for a couple of seconds while their temperature is taken (it can handle about 10 people per minute with a scan time of .6 seconds). Onboard auditory and visual indicators can be used so that nearby personnel can know whether to wave the person through or send them to another screening area. The data can also be sent to a laptop computer if more discretion and privacy is desired.

“We see a lot of need for this item at venues, stadiums, and concert halls and it can also help with TV compounds as it helps get the crew in more quickly,” says Shinn. “You won’t have labor tied up and the readings are accurate.”

Pricing is around $6,000 to purchase with rental available for around $400 a week.
