NBC Sports Network to Shut Down By End of Year

NBC Universal will shut down NBC Sports Network by the end of the year with programming shifting to USA Network which, according to reports at CNN and the Wall Street Journal, will begin “carrying and/or simulcasting certain NBC Sports programming” later this year. Peacock, NBCUniversal’s new streaming service, will also carry some of the programming.

NBC Sports Network will cease operation by the end of the year.

It is anticipated that NHL and NASCAR will both move over to USA Network.

“We’re all aware of how quickly the media landscape is evolving, and our company is taking thoughtful steps to stay ahead of these trends wherever possible and, in many instances, help set them,” said the memo which added that the move will make USA Network “an extraordinarily powerful platform in the media marketplace.”

NBC News reported that NBC Sports Group Chairman Pete Bevacqua said in an email to the company that the company is taking thoughtful steps to stay ahead of trends wherever possible “and, in many instances, help set them.”

Bevacqua said he will be hosting a virtual meeting on Jan. 26 to answer questions following the news. NBCUniversal is the parent company of both the NBC Sports Group and NBC News.
