Sports Broadcasting Hall of Fame Inductee Hugo Gaggioni on Pushing the Technological Boundaries

Sports Video Group and the Sports Broadcasting Hall of Fame held a small virtual reception last December where previous Hall of Famers and the voting committee had a chance to welcome the newbies and celebrate via Zoom. At the center of the ceremony was a series of interviews with the members of the class of 2020, and today, we have Hugo Gaggioni, a trail blazer in the sports-video-production industry. In conjunction with the Sports Broadcasting Hall of Fame, please donate to the Sports Broadcasting Fund to help those in our industry that are in need.

During this chat, Hugo reflects on the introduction of high-definition video and his tenacity for pushing new forms of technology. After joining Sony in 1988, Gaggioni has been a key force in the company’s efforts around next-generation formats like the move to digital recording formats, HDTV, UHD, and more. He holds several patents and has authored more than 40 technical publications in the areas of video compression, digital filter banks, HDTV, and UHDTV devices and systems.
