NBC Sports Group Retains Premier League Rights in the U.S. With New Six-Year Deal

The agreement keeps the EPL on NBC properties in the U.S. through 2028

After a hotly-contested bidding process that saw the likes of ESPN, FOX Sports, WarnerMedia, and CBS Sports all reportedly making aggressive plays, NBC Sports Group has retained the U.S. rights to the top flight league in English football: the Premier League.

It’s a six-year extension (that kicks in at the conclusion of the current season) that grants NBC the continued right to exclusively present all 380 matches, studio programming, and more in the United States across NBC, USA Network, Peacock, Telemundo, Universo, and other platforms. NBC Sports first began broadcasting the Premier League in the States in 2013.

According to Sports Business Journal, the deal will see NBC pay $2.6B over six years, which averages out to $433M per season.

“We are excited to come to this long-term extension with the Premier League,” NBC Sports Chairman Pete Bevacqua said in the official announcement of the deal on Thursday. “Our Premier League team, led by Jon Miller, has been incredibly dedicated to growing the Premier League in the United States over the last nine years. This new agreement is also a testament to the hard work of production, marketing and other areas of our company, as well as the tremendous partnership that has been established with the leadership and club owners of the Premier League.”

“We are delighted to announce our new US broadcast deal with NBC Sports, who have been brilliant partners for the Premier League over the last nine seasons,” Premier League Chief Executive Richard Masters added in the announcement. “NBC Sports has significantly strengthened the popularity of the League in the United States in that time through its fantastic coverage and promotion. NBC Sports’ Premier League Mornings programming is now a real institution among supporters in America, with fans getting up early to come together and cheer on their favorite club, week in, week out. It’s an exciting time for football in the US and we look forward to continuing to work with NBC Sports to bring our competition to even more fans over the next six years.”

It’s a huge win for NBC’s continued growth of its live streaming platform Peacock, where NBC Sports already live streams many Premier League matches exclusively. NBCSN is set to shutter at the end of the calendar year with Premier League matches expected to appear on NBC, USA Network, Peacock, Telemundo, Universo, and other platforms,
