TVU Networks Enables Live, National Broadcast of Republic of Korea’s National Counter-Terrorism Exercise

The Republic of Korea’s Army Special Warfare Command employed TVU Networks’ TVU One 4K HDR mobile transmitters for the challenging live broadcast over land, sea, and air of the 2021 National Counter-Terrorism Comprehensive Exercise, hosted by South Korean Prime Minister Kim Boo-kyum on November 12.

The exercise, involving around 450 participants from eight organizations, included simulations of emergency action in four terrorist attack scenarios including the hijacking of passenger ships at sea, the occupation of land passenger terminals, the threat of explosives and biochemical threats. It was broadcast live by national television network KoreaTV, along with regional broadcaster OBS Gyeongin TV, YouTube and other major streaming platforms.

KoreaTV combined real-time coverage from passenger ships, police cars, drones, speedboats and TV reporters for the complex production. The live broadcast of the exercise adopted four TVU One mobile transmitters and two dual-channel TVU Transceivers to transmit and receive video signals. All signals were aggregated to the KoreaTV studio center, where the director directed the broadcast, audio producers, graphic producers and other personnel to switch the shots, add background music and graphics, and delivered to KoreaTV’s public channels.

“The TVU One 5G transmitters brought great convenience to the live video broadcast of this anti-terrorism drill,” says OBS Gyeongin TV Technical Manager GunHo Song. “The cameraperson could shoot alone and move quickly to capture more details of the drill and send it back to the command center.

The fast-paced broadcast was anchored by the lightweight TVU One units, providing mobile transmission through network signal fluctuations, with frame synchronization, rapid multi-position synchronous switching and multi-view conversion to stabilize live signals across challenging airborne and seaborne camera positions.

“The output frame synchronization of multiple TVU One transmitters solved the problem of using multiple sets of devices for production,” he continued. “Compared with traditional video capture and transmission solutions, TVU live broadcast is simpler, reduces costs, and it provided great live video for this drill.”

TVU One 4K HDR supports 4K P60 resolution and uses both H.265 video compression and patented IS+ transmission algorithm to transmit superior reliable video, true 60 FPS frame rate, 10-bit HDR support and the ability to send at 100Mbps over a 5G cellular infrastructure. TVU One 4K transmits simultaneously over multiple aggregated connections, including cellular 3G/4G/LTE/5G, microwave, satellite, BGAN, WiFi and Ethernet at sub-second latency.
