Epic Games, Autodesk Join Forces to Accelerate Real-Time Experiences

Simply put, our goal is to help creators do what they love best by breaking down barriers between tools. Expect better-connected workflows that remove technical roadblocks and open up creative avenues.

To begin with, Autodesk Revit subscribers will have free access to Epic’s fast and easy visualization tool Twinmotion. Autodesk intends to make Twinmotion for Revit available to all Revit customers as part of an upcoming release.

Revit is an industry-leading solution for designing, documenting, and delivering building and infrastructure projects.

With Twinmotion, Revit users can easily bring their designs to life and create high-quality visualizations in a fast, interactive design process. Everything from stills and animations to immersive VR is possible.

For Autodesk, the collaboration with Epic represents another step in the company’s ongoing goal of connecting the physical and digital worlds. “We know our customers are looking for more visualization and collaboration experiences through extended reality,” said Autodesk EVP of AEC Design, Amy Bunszel. “Together with Epic Games, we will expand on what’s possible. In immersive environments, designers can communicate to their project teams and clients with unparalleled realism how projects will look and feel upon completion for better decision-making and outcomes.”

The joint effort is a natural fit for both Epic and Autodesk. Creators are using real-time 3D technology to change the world, from the way we interact with fashion brands and experience music, to the way cars are designed and houses are sold.

Both Epic and Autodesk recognize there’s a unique opportunity to play an important role in real-time 3D transformation.

By working together, we can remove technical barriers and make it easier than ever before for creators to produce the next generation of content and experiences across design, manufacturing, and entertainment.

Gateway to the Epic ecosystem

Twinmotion is continuously developed to include new and improved features, putting powerful visualization capability in the hands of Revit users. The most recent Twinmotion release added the capability to render images and video at very high resolutions of up to 64K—great for content intended for large displays such as billboards and video walls. That release also included a new integration with leading web modeling platform Sketchfab to provide drag-and-drop access to over 660,000 free assets.

But new and improved features like this are just the start. With the ability to start a scene in Twinmotion and then take it into Unreal Engine, Twinmotion can be the gateway to the whole Epic ecosystem.

Thanks to the Twinmotion Importer plugin, it’s easy to import from Twinmotion into Unreal Engine. With Unreal Engine’s powerful features at your fingertips, you have the open-ended flexibility and creative freedom to truly differentiate your projects.

Everything including digital twins, virtual collaborative platforms, XR experiences, immersive sales configurators, and more become possible.

You have access to the world’s largest and fastest growing library of ultra-realistic 3D scans—Quixel Megascans. Use them to populate your scene with high-fidelity props and background assets, or to find just the right texture or material.

Or even create your own smartphone photos into high-fidelity 3D models using RealityScan, a free 3D scanning app, developed in collaboration with Quixel. There’s also the Unreal Marketplace, Sketchfab, and the Epic Developer Community to explore.

If you’re completely new to Twinmotion, there’s a whole host of free online learning resources available to get you up to scratch. And when you’re ready to take the plunge and bring your scene into Unreal Engine, you’ll find plenty of online resources for that tool too, as well as forums and tutorials in the Epic Developer Community.

Real-time workflows for other industries

To start off with, Epic and Autodesk are focusing on tools and workflows for the AEC industries—but we’re not stopping there. In the future, we plan to jointly develop experiences for customers in M&E and manufacturing, bringing real-time content creation to new and diverse audiences.
