SVG’s Inaugural Sports Cloud Production Summit Examines Next-Gen Live Workflows

200+ industry pros attended the gathering in New York City

The sports-production industry has made great strides toward live cloud-based production of sports events over the past year. With that in mind, SVG hosted its inaugural Sports Cloud Production Forum in New York City on May 10. Held at The Cutting Room, the Forum drew more than 200 members of the SVG community to discuss the current state of live cloud-based production, its place in the current sports-production landscape, and what the industry needs to do to leverage cloud-based tools and services in more-pragmatic and -beneficial ways.

The inaugural SVG Sports Cloud Production Forum drew more than 200 to The Cutting Room in New York City.

First off, on a panel titled “Adventures in Live Cloud-Based Sports Production,” Dan Lannon, manager, REMI operations, ESPN, and Corey Smith, senior director, digital, software engineering, CBS Sports and Paramount+, chronicled their real-world experiences in the use of the cloud for live sports production.

The day also included a trio of Cloud Service Provider Perspectives from AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft. Chyron, Tagboard, and Vizrt each presented a case study regarding the company’s work with Rochester University, Fox Sports, and BT Sport, respectively.

On the “Live Cloud-Based Production Tools: The SaaS Revolution” panel, speakers from Alpha, Arkona, Grabyo, and LiveU offered details on new services and products that can make a difference in production.

Next up, the “Virtualized Infrastructure: Agility, Scale, and Cost Optimization” panel addressed how broadcasters increasingly rely on cloud-native architectures to provide the agile, scalable, cost-effective workflows, with speakers from AWS, Fortinet, Riedel Communications, Sony, and TAG Video.

The day closed with a panel titled “How Production Service Providers Are Leveraging the Cloud” and featuring Broadcast Management Group, Game Creek Video, Mobile TV Group, and NEP.
