Platinum White Paper: The Cinematic Look in Live Production — Bridging Aesthetics and Real-Time Broadcast Technology with Grass Valley
Story Highlights
The demand for a cinematic aesthetic—often referred to as the “film look”—is growing in live production, especially for select camera angles. While traditional film settings like 24p frame rate and narrow shutter angles are less practical in live environments, a shallow depth of field remains a key visual goal.

This is influenced by lens focal length and imager size. However, even small 2/3-inch sensors can produce a depth of field that’s too shallow at certain positions, and larger sensors amplify this, requiring highly precise focus control. Rather than defaulting to large imagers, the better approach is to match sensor size to specific production needs. A versatile live setup often includes a mix of camera types—standard, super slow-motion, wireless, and compact.
These must all deliver consistent color, gradation, and sharpness, achieved through uniform signal processing
or tailored compensation methods. This paper explores camera solutions for achieving cinematic aesthetics in live production, using as a case study a camera family that features CMOS image sensors in various sizes and employs different color separation systems, while maintaining uniform processing capabilities and seamless workflow integration.
