IBC 2016: Aperi Media Function Virtualisation records big win in Asia-Pacific telecoms

IP media-processing company Aperi is providing a major Asia-Pacific–based global service provider with its integrated native IP live media network and processing platform. Building on recent implementations, including a 4K/UHD live IP remote production during the EURO 2016 football championships, Aperi will help the telecommunications leader achieve its vision of virtualised media and network functions for its expanding media-services network.

Joop Janssen has been named CEO of Aperi.

“It’s gratifying to see a major service provider with a large global footprint embrace Aperi’s Media Function Virtualisation as it expands its points of presence,” said Aperi CEO Joop Janssen. “IP-based, virtualised services are critical to adequately address future needs in a rapidly changing media landscape and to achieve the necessary efficiencies and capabilities to meet consumer demands.”

Aperi and Ciena recently signed a worldwide agreement whereby Ciena will offer Aperi’s Media Function Virtualisation (MFV) ecosystem with its portfolio of converged packet-optical and packet-switching platforms.

The Aperi platform, which supports the AIMS roadmap as well as all major standards, provides a migration from SDI to a true native IP live-production architecture through MFV. The system provides broadcasters and service providers with low-latency and software-based virtualisation for mission-critical media-processing functions in live sports, entertainment, and news production.

A generic A1105 compute and switch platform includes the company’s latest SDMP microserver technology and a broad set of real-time media-processing function software applications — available through Aperi’s App Store. Media providers and broadcasters benefit from more-agile media processing that offers major codec applications — J2K, ASI H.264 — more cost-effectively, with the ability to easily and economically spin up and down services as needed.

Aperi is demonstrating its platform at IBC. The demo (stand 2.C27) features a 4K/VC-2 live remote production between the Aperi and Gearhouse stands. AES67 and JPEG 2000; Multiviewer, SMPTE 2022-1,2,5,6,7, and TR-03 encapsulations; and a powerful test and measurement tool called the IP Packet Generator Analyser are on display. Ciena’s Waveserver with 400-Gbps capacity are also featured.
