IBC 2017: Canon intros range of professional camcorders, reference displays

Canon unveiled a new class of camcorder for video enthusiasts who are passionate about capturing the stories, moments, and content that matter the most. From big adventures to cherished memories, the LEGRIA GX10 is equipped to shoot it all in exceptional quality. Offering advanced capabilities and the upmost reliability, this 4K 50p video recording device is essential for anyone who loves to record incredible footage and is striving to take their content to the next level.

The company also announced the expansion of its professional camcorder range with the launch of four new camcorders – the 4K 50P capable XF405 and XF400 and the Full HD XA15 and XA11. Delivering first class optics, powerful sensors and a range of versatile features, these compact and lightweight camcorders are perfect for a broad range of professional video productions. In addition, the DP-V2411, a 24-inch professional reference display designed for 4K High Dynamic Range (HDR) broadcast and film production workflows, recently made its debut. Offering stunning image quality with high luminance and wide color gamut, extensive functionality and advanced interfaces, the DP-V2411 is the perfect tool for broadcasters and film makers.

LEGRIA GX10
The LEGRIA GX10 captures image quality that will stand the test of time. Equipped with 4K 50p shooting capabilities, it provides four times the resolution of 1080p Full HD, reproducing even the smallest detail and making those special moments come to life on screen. Offering a versatile recording experience, the LEGRIA GX10 supports shooting in MP4 at either 35Mbps for Full HD, or in 150Mbps for 4K 50p – perfect for fast-paced action. Capturing up to 100fps, this new in class camcorder enables you to produce a variety of content from time-lapse to 0.25x slow motion effects.

The LEGRIA GX10 facilitates the making of professional quality videos in a simple and easy way. It’s the first camcorder with a 1.0-type sensor that integrates Canon’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology, providing a shallow depth of field and responsive, accurate and customizable focus. Three optical ND filters deliver two, four or eight stops of exposure control superb image quality in the darkest and brightest conditions, whilst the newly developed wide angle 4K lens with 15x zoom further ensures you get the quality that 4K promises.

Thanks to the Wide Dynamic Range (DR) mode, the DR is extended to 800% to capture greater detail in highlights and shadows for clear, vibrant images that are ready to share without editing. The large, instinctive, vari-angle touchscreen gives you fast and easy access to essential functions needed in dynamic shooting scenarios such as parties, weddings or action-packed holidays. At the same time, the camera’s 5-Axis Image Stabilization (IS) is optimized to ensure you get steady footage throughout the zoom range.

A compact, lightweight and robust camcorder, jam-packed with professional functions, the LEGRIA GX10 is a reliable video recorder for any occasion. The ergonomic design mimics that of professional camcorders featuring a tilt-adjustable viewfinder, professional style zoom rocker and custom function buttons. XF405 and XF400

The XF405 and XF400 are equipped with a newly developed 15x optical zoom lens (35 mm film equivalent: 25.5 mm–382.5 mm), a 1.0-Type CMOS sensor and a Dual DIGIC DV 6 image-processing platform to achieve high-quality 4K/50p images across the entire zoom range. They also offer continuous 100fps recording in Full HD in order to deliver slow motion footage. These advanced features are all integrated in a compact and lightweight body. Thanks to built-in Neutral Density (ND) filters, the XF405 and XF400 can capture stunning images with a shallow depth of field – even in adverse lighting conditions. Relay and simultaneous recording are provided via Dual SD card slots, which helps to expand recording times and to create an immediate backup. A range of interface options are featured in the XF405 and XF400, including HDMI, an XLR Professional audio terminal, LAN and Remote. The XF405 also features a 3G-SDI terminal. Built-in WiFi capability enables FTP file transfer and allows the camcorders to be controlled with a mobile device via Browser Remote.

Canon XF405

The XF405 and XF400 support UHD/50P MP4 and XF-AVC format (150Mbps) recording and 100fps continuous slow motion shooting. Low noise and high sensitivity are managed by the combination of a 1.0-Type CMOS sensor and dual DIGIC DV 6 image processors, which deliver high-quality footage with great clarity and detail. Additionally, Wide Dynamic Range (DR) mode enables the user to shoot with 800% wide dynamic range, providing greater detail in the mid to high tones.

A newly developed 4K lens, 1.0-Type CMOS sensor and Super UD elements combine in the XF405 and XF400 to minimize chromatic aberration and to provide stunning image clarity. Both camcorders comprise an ultra-wide 25.5mm, high magnification, 15x optical zoom in 4K. Moreover, 30x Advanced Zoom capability is offered in Full HD mode, without any image deterioration. An advanced 5-Axis Image Stabilizer (IS) ensures stable images are captured in any scenario which involves camera movement. A 0.8x Wide angle and 1.5x tele-converter deliver additional flexibility and coverage in 4K and Full HD.

Dual Pixel CMOS AF is featured in both the XF405 and XF400 for fast and accurate autofocusing in approximately 80% of the image. A touch screen allows further focus control and intuitive camera operation. Various AF options are offered including Face Priority AF and Face Only AF, alongside the innovative Dual Pixel Focus Guide. This feature supports manual focus shooting by visually indicating the focus position.

XA15 and XA11
The XA15 and XA11 are Full HD camcorders which feature stunning 20x 26.8mm-576mm optical zoom lenses to flexibly capture a variety of scenes with superb image quality. A Hi-UD lens supports the reduction of chromatic aberration and drives vivid imaging. Canon’s HD CMOS Sensor and the powerful DIGIC DV4 image processing platform deliver great performance in low light and the ability to capture superb Full HD images in 50P at 35Mbps. Wide DR mode supports the smooth compression of high luminance areas to achieve 600% DR. This makes it possible to shoot with smooth color gradation and suppressed overexposure. This is applicable to any shooting environment where the difference between light and dark areas is prone to causing overexposure. Flexible image expression is supported by a Slow/Fast Segment function that enables users to select shooting speeds from 0.4x to a maximum of 1,200x.

Both camcorders are capable of recording in both AVCHD and MP4 formats, at multiple bit rates, simultaneously, to Dual SD card slots. The XA15 and XA11 offer a range of various interfaces including HDMI, XLR professional audio terminals, headphone jack and optional GPS support. The XA15 also features an SDI output. Comprising compact and lightweight bodies, the XA11 and X15 are ideal for high-action shoots when both speed and mobility are essential. Dynamic Mode provides 5-Axis image stabilization – roll axis, horizontal roll, vertical roll, up-down and left-right – to ensure smooth image capture in various styles of fast-paced shoots.

DP-V2411
The DP-V2411 offers a high luminance performance, delivering full screen white of 600 cd/m2, with the ability to increase luminance up to 1,000 cd/m2, using the Boost Contrast mode. Canon’s original built-in backlight control system is able to correct brightness to ensure a uniform, stable, precise and high-quality image.

Delivering accurate color reproduction, the DP-V2411 uses a direct matrix backlight LED panel which has been optimized to an IPS liquid crystal display to achieve a much wider color gamut. The display supports a broad range of standards, including the ITU-R BT.2020 Ultra HD broadcast standard color gamut, ITU-R BT.709, EBU and SMPTE-C, as well as the DCI-P3 digital cinema standard. The DP-V2411 also supports ACES proxy – the transmission standards of ACES – whose framework for colour management is advocated by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS).

Through its adherence to the latest HDR Electro Optical Transfer Functions (EOTFs), PQ and Hybrid Log Gamma, along with Canon Log 2/3, the DP-V2411 offers accurate image reproduction for HDR production. The DP-V2411 is able to display metadata from Canon’s Cinema EOS camera range and ARRI Camera Systems. Preset LUTs are installed on the DP-V2411 for both Canon Log and ARRI Log C for HDR monitoring. Enhancing the efficiency of production, the camera can simply be connected to the DP-V2411 without the need to add any special LUTs to check the quality of HDR signal.

Enabling broadcasters and filmmakers to embrace the future, the DP-V2411 comprises a range of advanced 4K HDR interfaces. For a more streamlined and efficient broadcast operation, it is the first Canon display to feature 12G-SDI, which can send 4K 50P signal with a single cable, reducing the amount of equipment. The DP-V2411 also features a HDMI terminal, capable of 4K 50P signal with a single cable for easy connection to cameras or playout systems.

The DP-V2411’s HDR functions support the highest quality for HDR production. A built-in 4K waveform monitor can display scales for PQ and Hybrid Log-Gamma signal, while the HDR False Colour feature also supports both PQ and Hybrid Log-Gamma signal. HDR False Colour shows a different colour, based on the input signal level, on the monitor. In addition to this False Colour function, the DP-V2411 can display HDR image and False Colour image simultaneously in split screen from a single 4K input. The DP-V2411 also provides a HDR and SDR comparison function, which allows images to be compared in split screen on the monitor. This removes the requirement for two monitors for this task, further boosting efficiency in the production process.

 

With a compact 24-inch size, a short depth of just 105mm, a weight of just 12kg and a durable aluminum frame – the cost effective DP-V2411 can save space in the studio or track. Further convenience is offered via the DP-V2411’s removable carrying handle. The front body design of the DP-V2411 leverages the same noise-free design as the DP-V2410 so as not to interfere with production work.

The DP-V2411 will be on display at Canon’s stand (Hall 12, stand D60) at the forthcoming IBC event in Amsterdam between 14-19 September.
