NAB 2019: NewTek, Vizrt Unveil NDI 4 with Unlimited Video Channel Recording

NewTek and Vizrt today unveiled NDI 4 with a vast array of new capabilities that make video production over IP faster and more efficient, merging the fields of live video and post production by including the ability to record unlimited NDI video channels for true multi-camera editing with full synchronization. NDI has the widest support of any IP video technology with thousands of companies implementing the SDK, putting the technology in the hands of millions of users globally. In the last 3 years, NDI has become the way video producers (from game streamers to tier one broadcasters) work, and it is supported in products from the biggest brands in the industry such as Panasonic, Avid, Microsoft Skype, Epic Games, Magewell, Adobe, Grass Valley, EVS, Vizrt, ChyronHego, Ross, Atomos, Sony, and many more.

NDI 4 offers the revolutionary capability to record an unlimited number of NDI video channels with full synchronization, in any video or audio format, including 4K and above. NDI video sources are recorded without recompression providing the ability to ISO-record any number of channels, limited only by disk and network performance. With recordings time-stamped and time-base corrected, any number of channels on any number of machines are fully synchronized, making video editing from multiple sources of the same event fundamentally easier, and making multi-cam editing truly accessible for the first time. NDI recording fully supports alpha channel, any number of audio channels, and works with 16bpp sources at full precision. The free NDI SDK will include all recording tools.

“The last video standard will be IP, and it’s our mission to make sure that we leverage every opportunity to bring the power of computers, software and networks with NDI to increase the speed and efficiency of video storytelling,” said Dr. Andrew Cross, president and CTO of NewTek. “NDI and computer networks give you infinitely more flexibility than you could have ever had in an SDI world. All NDI devices are connected and automatically discovered with every other, and our software-centric focus lets us develop revolutionary new approaches to things like NDI recording, where true multi-cam editing is now a reality.”

NDI 4 boasts increased efficiencies across many areas that include improvements in video quality without an increase in bit-rate, support for a 16 bit video path, and many more input and output colors formats. NDI 4 provides support for a discovery server allowing for the use of a server or the cloud to coordinate and connect all sources. Also included is NDI|HX which is now fully integrated into the NDI Embedded SDK. Additionally, support for Epic Games Unreal Engine in NDI 4 makes it possible for apps created in Unreal to appear as NDI sources.

“As one of the very first companies to adopt NDI, we have always been enthusiastic advocates of the technology,” said Michael Hallén, CEO for Vizrt. “As the two companies join forces we will combine our efforts to develop and innovate NDI with the goal of making a fully IP-based world of video production available to everyone.”

The NDI 4 SDK and NDI Tools are free downloads that will be available in Q2 2019 at ndi.newtek.com.
