For the third consecutive year, SVG polled several major sports and media organizations on how live sports productions are being backhauled from the field and delivered to fans. How is the use of satellite vs. fiber evolving, and how quickly is IP delivery making inroads as a primary contribution tool? Transmission-focused execs from major sports broadcassters weigh in on what this year-over-year data means for the industry and how they expect it to change in the future, along with top-of-mind issues like security, budgets, and next-gen technology such as HEVC, ATSC 3.0, 4K, HDR, and more.

In recent years, the at-home model has transformed the way lower-tier sports events are produced and backhauled and also provided top-tier events with access to content and tools back at the broadcast center — all while reducing costly onsite resources. However, standards and best practices for the model have yet to be agreed upon. Experts working in the at-home–production trenches discuss the latest advances in this Wild West sector.

Thanks to IP delivery, sports-content providers are finding efficient and cost-effective new ways to backhaul live productions. In addition, the need for fat data pipes onsite at remote productions has pushed IP even further to the forefront. However, it’s important that vendors help broadcasters bridge the gap from old to new when transitioning their facilities and workflows to IP. How will IP transmission evolve in the coming years. What challenges lie ahead?

Delivery of live 4K UHD sports productions to the home has become a weekly occurrence in the U.S., Canada, and the UK. Meanwhile, live HDR (in both 4K and 1080p) production is quickly ramping up, creating new transmission challenges for broadcasters. However, the majority of these live 4K and HDR events have yet to impact the broadcast center: they are being produced in 4K in the truck onsite and sent directly to MVPDs for distribution. Industry leaders address what to expect on the 4K and HDR front, including the potential impact of ATSC 3.0, in the coming months and the greatest hurdles left to clear.

4:15 – 5:00 p.m.: Low-Cost Transmission Tools: Bonded Cellular, Public-Internet Delivery, the Cloud, and More
The use of bonded-cellular solutions as a low-cost tool to backhaul and deliver live feeds from lower-tier sports events has exploded over the past half decade. Meanwhile, transmission over the public internet has become increasingly popular for reducing costs while maintaining acceptable quality on live sports shows. How are tools like these changing the industry, and how can you integrate them into your operation without sacrificing production quality? And will content producers begin relying on these tools and workflows for higher-profile sports events anytime soon?
