LiveTV:LA: Truck Vendors Discuss the Biggest Challenges Remaining in 4K Production

2016 proved to be a year of positive growth for UHD sports production in North America, particularly thanks to DirecTV in the United States and Rogers in Canada. However, the industry is still in its infacy and the engineering and operations challenges behind live UHD sports production are still plentiful.

At the LiveTV:LA conference last month, key leaders from some of the major production truck providers offered their takes on the latest UHD and what obstacles still need to be cleared to make 4K a more practical option.

4K/UHD production presents a multitude of challenges. Phil Garvin, president and co-founder of Mobile TV Group, of the first truck providers in the U.S. to build a fully-4K truck, shares his thoughts on the most critical obstacles the medium presents.

Gravity Media Group, which owns Gearhouse Broadcast, has invested in the building of a 4K truck that is already on the road in Australia and a similar truck set to launch in the United States in early 2017. The company’s COO Kevin Moorhouse does see major challenges that still remain, especially when it comes to deploying 4K at a large scale, such as at a major tennis tournament.

Many believe that HDR is what can put 4K over the top with consumers. Mike Johnson, director of engineering, at Dome Productions, considers HDR a potential gamechanger and he is experimenting with it.
