Gambling Scandal Is Isolated, Stern Says

The
commissioner of the National Basketball Association, David Stern, confirmed
today that federal authorities expect to accuse one of its referees, Tim
Donaghy, of betting on N.B.A. games and providing information to gamblers.

But he
called the matter “an isolated incident,” and said that the league did not
become aware of the case until June 20, when it was contacted by the F.B.I Mr.
Donaghy resigned on July 9.
