IDX Wireless HD System Helps Cougars Roar

Washington State University will use its new IDX CW-5HD/CAM~WAVE wireless-transmission-system package for a two-camera live close-up field-coverage system during broadcasts of all of its local Cougars football games in HD.

The system delivers full uncompressed 720p/1080i HD/SDI video and uses MIMO technology transmitting over the 5.2- to 5.8-megahertz public spectrum.

The IDX 5-mHz MIMO scheme essentially divides the uncompressed signal into four different streams and recombines them at the receive point. Using the dual receivers enables the director to be flexible in placing and/or picking up shots from the camera remotes.

The IDX system joins a video unit the school added last year, housed in a trailer developed by Sony Solutions and equipped with Sony PDWF355L HD ENG/EFP cameras and the CAM~WAVE system to feed the stadium’s Jumbotron screen with live play-by-play video during games.

Two CAM~WAVE transmitter-equipped cameras roved each sideline, wirelessly sending uncompressed HD/SDI signals to four CAM~WAVE receivers—two on each side of the field and located in the stands at each 25-yard line. Signals from the receivers were hardwired into the trailer for retransmission to the Jumbotron screen and were frequently picked up as part of the game’s live broadcast coverage or used as source material to help referees decide difficult challenged plays.
