Vimond Supports 3D Services with Microsoft Silverlight Technology
Vimond Media Solutions has announced support for 3D streaming through its award-winning over-the-top (OTT) platform and its suite of applications, giving broadcasters the ability to augment their 2D services with 3D content viewable on connected Blu-ray consoles, connected TVs, desktop computers, tablets, and other mobile devices. Vimond’s unique video player is based on Microsoft Silverlight technology and supports dual 2D and 3D display capabilities.
With Vimond’s products, OTT service publishers can now publish the same service efficiently and cost-effectively on many networks and formats at the same time, reducing the need for parallel setups and delivery chains.
In addition, Vimond has announced plans to enhance its client applications so that menu structures, buttons, modules, and other interactive elements fit uniformly with the 3D transmission. In this way, broadcasters and media owners will have the reassurance that they can easily and quickly adapt their services to support new 3D connected-TV models or portable viewing devices as they are launched.
“3D is moving from buzzword to reality in many markets, and a lot of the TV channels we support have started to deploy 3D transmission, or are planning to do so in the near future,” said Helge Høibraaten, CEO of Vimond Media Solutions. “3D adds a degree of complexity for online services, since online tends to be much more interactive and have more display elements that need to be adapted as well. So we are pleased to announce this development, which means that Vimond users now have a clear and easy route to 3D service provision.”
The advanced Vimond platform provides a comprehensive environment for managing and delivering multiformat OTT services, with full facilities for all creative, logistic, and business aspects of the operation. With its modular architecture, Vimond offers sophisticated tools and controls for every aspect of an OTT service, from ingest and encoding, through conditional access to business-intelligence reporting.
“As any parent will tell you, kids really appreciate the extra excitement of going to the movies to watch in 3D,” said Glenn Pedersen, Vimond CTO. “We think this excitement will spread to online content as well, and Vimond can now support our customers in all the technical aspects of their new 3D business.”
