VITAC Provides Captioning for Multiple College Football Bowl Games

College football bowl season kicked off Dec. 21 with the Appalachian State Mountaineers taking on the North Texas Mean Green in the Myrtle Beach Bowl from Brooks Stadium in Conway, SC. It will be all hands on deck this college bowl season as VITAC will provide captions for 30 football games over the next few weeks, including the college football playoff semifinals on Jan. 1 and the entire New Year’s Six, culminating with the national championship game on Jan. 11 from Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, FL.

Captioning a live sporting event is an entirely different ballgame and, just as teams need great chemistry and teamwork to be successful, so, too, does VITAC’s realtime department. The company’s captioners, production coordinators, and supervisors prep for the big games, researching rosters, player names, and stats in advance of each contest.

Captioning an event like a college bowl game presents a unique set of challenges. Unlike captioning for a pre-recorded show or a live event that moves at a little slower pace, the action on the field (or diamond or court or ice) is fast, the announcers’ play-by-play and banter is quick, and athlete names stats, and jargon is peppered throughout the broadcast.
