Series, Cinema, and Non-Scripted, the International Novelties From the Mediapro Studio Distribution at Mipcom

Between October 16th and 19th, the media and entertainment industry will hold its traditional appointment in Cannes for the 39th edition of the International Co-Production & Entertainment Content Market (MIPCOM), where THE MEDIAPRO STUDIO Distribution will present the company’s most ambitious titles, international productions that include series, cinema and successful non-scripted content that aspire to expand their distribution worldwide.

“MIPCOM is once again the global industry’s unmissable event where, in addition to having the opportunity of meeting our customers and colleagues in person and presenting our new slate, we have a unique opportunity to get a feel for the sector at a time of very interesting evolution at all levels”, says Marta Ezpeleta, head of THE MEDIAPRO STUDIO Distribution.

“The Head”, THE MEDIAPRO STUDIO’s premier international franchise, leads the company’s sales portfolio after two seasons of international success with distribution in more than 90 countries. Also prominent are two other franchises with second seasons already completed: “Express”, Liosngate+’s first international original series shot and produced in Spain, starring Maggie Civantos as a criminal psychologist; and “Kosta (The Paradise)”, the thriller co-produced by THE MEDIAPRO STUDIO and Finnish public broadcaster YLE, set in the Finnish community on the Costa del Sol, starring Fran Perea and Finnish actress Riitta Havukainen.

Also present at Cannes after its premiere at the beginning of the year is “Las Pelotaris 1926”, the first scripted fiction series premiered after the strategic alliance for the co-production of content between THE MEDIAPRO STUDIO and VIX. Received to widespread critical acclaim after season one premiered in Mexico, Latin America and the United States and filmed between Spain and Mexico, “Las Pelotaris 1926” narrates the struggle of three Basque pelota players who try to achieve their dreams by overcoming the prejudices and obstacles of a predominantly patriarchal world in the 1920’s.

Other STUDIO productions in Latin America highlighted this year at MIPCOM, both with second seasons pending premiere, are “Las Bravas”, a series co-produced with WarnerMedia this tale of overcoming adversity with women’s football as a backdrop was widely acclaimed by audiences; and the comedy “Primate”, based on the true anecdotes of Colombian actor Christian Tappan.

In addition, this year THE MEDIAPRO STUDIO Distribution will also present “Sanity”, a production currently in development and the adaptation of Javier Castillo‘s novel “El día que se perdió la cordura”, of which THE MEDIAPRO STUDIO acquired the rights of the TV series adaptation format.

Fiction content also includes cinema and this year’s principal novelty is “El 47”, a film written and directed by Marcel Barrena and starring Eduard Fernández, based on the true story of Manolo Vital, whose tenacity and determination led him to transform the life of a working-class neighborhood in Barcelona in the 1970’s. The company’s slate also includes hits such as “The Good Boss”, the multi-award-winning film by Fernando León de Aranoa starring Javier Bardem, and “Official Competition”, a comedy by Gastón Duprat and Mariano Cohn featuring Penélope Cruz, Antonio Banderas and Oscar Martínez; independent films such as “Utama”, the debut film from Alejandro Loayza, chosen to represent Bolivia at last year’s Oscars and having won several awards at the Sundance and Malaga festivals as well as Platinum Awards. Other feature film highlights in THE MEDIAPRO STUDIO Distribution’s portfolio include action thrillers shot in English “Hunting Ava Bravo”, with Kate del Castillo premiered on Amazon Prime Video Latin America, and “Give Me Your Eyes”, both directed by Gary Auerbach.

Other notable highlights from the novelties of non-scripted content presented this year by the company, include successful titles such as the Hostoil productions (THE MEDIAPRO STUDIO) “El Conquistador”, the most extreme and most successful reality television show in Spain that, which after pulverizing viewing share records for 19 straight seasons on ETB, has made the leap to national television on TVE while continuing to prepare its twentieth season on Basque regional TV network; and “Atrápame si puedes”, a format that since its premiere on ETB2 in 2014, has been extended to eleven regional channels across Spain with adaptations that have made their way in a complex television context positioned among the most popular programs on several regional TV networks.

And finally, another novelty this year is “400”, a format created by El Terrat (THE MEDIAPRO STUDIO), premiered on the Valencian regional TV channel À Punt, a docureality where the presenter Pere Aznar spends every week with a different social outreach associations in search of stories of overcoming adversity and a reason to feel happy, and which now has the opportunity to present itself in the market for future adaptations internationally.
