NAB 2023: New Mics and World First Streaming Headset Among Audio-Technica’s Showfloor Innovations

Audio-Technica is exhibiting the BP3600 Immersive Audio Microphone, the AT2020USB-X cardioid condenser USB microphone, and the ATH-M50xSTS and ATH-M50xSTS-USB StreamSet streaming headsets at NAB Show.

The BP3600 is a premium broadcast audio tool capable of capturing stable, three-dimensional sound beds at sporting events, concerts, festivals, movie sets, and more. It has eight compact capsule assemblies with excellent high-frequency characteristics integrated into the body while remaining compact and lightweight enough for single-operator usability and easy setup. Direct routing is also possible, with no need for additional decoding or latency processing with 5.1.4-channel speaker layouts. This practical, state-of-the-art broadcasting solution captures realistic sound that will bring the recording location directly to listeners without the need for extensive equipment.

The BP3600’s eight microphone modules extend from the body to form a cube with 15cm (5.9in) between each microphone assembly. Each microphone assembly in the eight-channel near-coincident array is equipped with a 12mm hypercardioid capsule to produce ideally separated, discrete signals and deliver immersive audio experiences with ample spaciousness.

When used in a typical 5.1.4 immersive scenario, the four upper microphone channels can be assigned to the upper speaker channels, and the four lower channels can be assigned to the lower speaker channels. This eliminates the need for additional decoding or latency processing during routing.

User-friendliness is enhanced with the main unit’s highly visible color-coded and numbered channel indicator rings that allow for easy identification of channels. To ensure that on-site setup is simple when time is limited, each microphone assembly features a lock that guarantees precise, repeatable positioning and prevents accidental removal. These connector locks additionally protect the microphone terminals from the elements, including rain, and make disconnecting an assembly quick and reliable. Also included is a safety strap that can be connected to drop-prevention wires when used above spectators in stadiums, auditoriums, or other venues.

The end of the microphone’s grip includes a LEMO 2B multi-pin output connector for attaching the included LEMO-to-XLRM (x8) breakout cable for routing the eight channels to a mixing console or audio interface. LEMO-to-LEMO 2B multi-pin connector extension cables are available separately for use between the microphone and the breakout cable to increase the cable run length. Phantom power (48 VDC) is required for each channel.

A reimagining of the AT2020USB+, the AT2020USB-X cardioid condenser USB microphone is specially designed to meet the needs of streamers, podcasters, musicians and other content creators, offering the critically acclaimed sound of the original AT2020 upgraded to 24-bit/96kHz sampling rate with the convenience of plug-and-play USB-C operation.

Improvements to the AT2020USB-X include a soft-touch capacitive mute button on the body to quickly and silently mute audio at the microphone, high-resolution A/D converter with 24-bit/96 kHz sampling rate for clear and natural sound production, two-state LED indicator ring lights for when the microphone is powered on or muted, and an improved custom desk stand for a stable and secure base.

The AT2020USB-X also features a built-in headphone jack with volume and mix control to let users directly monitor with no delay, as well as blend microphone signals with computer audio. Equipped with a USB-C output and a cable with USB-C and USB-A options, this expands the microphones compatibility and makes it easier to use, now and in the future. The AT2020USB-X has a high-output internal headphone amplifier that delivers superior clarity, volume, and musical detail.

Audio-Technica is also introducing its ATH-M50xSTS and ATH-M50xSTS-USB StreamSet streaming headsets. These models are the world’s first headsets specifically developed to address the needs of live-streaming content creators. Based on the critically acclaimed ATH-M50x professional monitor headphones and incorporating technology from the iconic 20 Series microphones, the ATH-M50xSTS and ATH-M50xSTS-USB deliver full-spectrum, studio-quality for users and listeners on the receiving end.

The headsets are equipped with the same 45mm large-aperture drivers to provide exceptional clarity throughout an extended frequency range, with deep, accurate bass response. The streaming headsets come with two sets of distinct earpads: M50x earpads that stress audio quality and sound isolation; mesh and leatherette earpads that emphasize breathability and comfort.

Both models use a cardioid condenser capsule on a flexible boom arm, allowing for ideal positioning even with head movement. The result is a rich, studio-quality vocal presence without background noise and output at a consistent level. The headsets’ microphone can be muted quickly and efficiently simply by flipping the boom arm into the up position.

The ATH-M50xSTS uses a 2-meter (6.6ft) permanently attached cable with 3.5mm (1/8in) headphone input (plus 6.3mm adapter) and XLR microphone output. The ATH-M50xSTS-USB uses a 2-meter permanently attached cable with USB-A connection (and USB-A to USB-C adapter) for plug-and-play connectivity to PCs and Macs. In addition, the ATH-M50xSTS-USB includes an A/D converter with a sampling rate up to 24-bit/96kHz and sidetone circuitry that lets vocals be heard in the headset (with volume controlled by a dial on the earcup) for a more natural, conversational feel.

Finally, A-T is expanding its offerings for content creation with the AT8700 Adjustable Microphone Boom Arm. Although engineered generally for A-T’s 20 Series microphones and their use in podcasting, streaming and other modes of content creation, the AT8700 is just as useful for all other microphones and applications requiring a boom arm.

This table-mount boom arm securely attaches to the edge of a desk and features 5/8″-27 thread and heavy-duty suspension allowing full 360-degree rotation, while providing users the ability to place the microphone in the exact position they need when recording, podcasting, streaming, etc. Users can attach their favorite microphone to this professional-quality boom arm to add versatility to their recording or streaming setup and free up space. The unit comes standard with six USB cable clips, six XLR cable clips and a table clamp. Additionally, the AT8700 folds for easy transportation.

“As our 20 Series line of microphones continues to expand and improve, it is important for us to have a boom arm that matches the quality of each of our products, and the AT8700 acts as a premium boom arm solution for content creators and beyond,” stated Gary Boss, Audio-Technica U.S. Marketing Director.
