DaVinci Resolve 18 Among Blackmagic Updates

Announcements from Blackmagic Design include DaVinci Resolve 18, which has a new cloud workflow, plus some new high performance network storage solutions designed for film and television. It also released ATEM Constellation HD, a new family of live production switchers, as well as 2 new HyperDeck models.

DaVinci Resolve 18 adds a lot of new features, but the really big news is the collaborative workflow support. It supports multiple people working on the same product from anywhere on the planet

It works with our new Blackmagic Cloud web site. It’s really easy to use as the DaVinci Resolve project window now has a local tab for your local projects and a cloud tab for projects on Blackmagic Cloud. You can use the cloud projects in the same way as local projects, but the cloud projects can be shared with any other user who has a Blackmagic Cloud ID. This means you could work on a project in New York and then share the project with a colorist in London and they could grade while you edit. All at the same time.

DaVinci Resolve 18 also includes the new Blackmagic Proxy Generator app that automatically creates and manages proxies from camera originals. You can create a watch folder and any new media is automatically converted into H.264, H.265 or ProRes proxies. It’s fully automatic! There is also a new proxy menu in DaVinci Resolve for switching between camera original footage and proxies in a single click.
Not only can you do collaboration with Blackmagic Cloud, but you can even live stream the viewer to a remote user such as a client. This is important when color grading as your client can watch the session from their location. There is a new viewer app called DaVinci Remote Monitoring, which they use to watch the grade. It’s designed for high end film and features low latency, high quality 12-bit image quality and can output to a DeckLink card.

This update also features incredible new tools for colorists. Located in the magic mask palette, the new object mask is able to recognize and track the movement of thousands of unique objects. The new depth map effect lets you instantly generate a 3D depth map of a scene to quickly grade the foreground separately from the background, and vice versa, while ultra beauty gives you advanced control over a subject when performing corrective beauty work.

FlexBus is Fairlight’s flexible audio busing and routing system designed for managing high track counts, extensive plug-in processing, perfect synchronization and multiple project deliverables. DaVinci Resolve 18 now lets you convert legacy fixed bus Fairlight projects to FlexBus with a single click. The Dolby Atmos deliverable toolset has also been expanded to support rendering of a binaural output from a complex Dolby Atmos mix.

In Fusion, GPU acceleration allows paint brush strokes to be generated and displayed in real time, for a more intuitive approach when performing cover up work or graphic design. Instant visual feedback allows you to assess your work and make corrections in any stroke style or shape. Subtitle support has also been expanded to include TTML and XML timed texts and embedded MXF/IMF subtitles.

Introducing ATEM Constellation HD

At the NAB 2022 show we also announced a new family of live production switchers that include powerful broadcast features, while including the latest electronics technology so they are extremely affordable.
The new models are a 1 M/E model with 10 x 3G-SDI inputs, 2 M/E model with 20 x 3G-SDI inputs and a 4 M/E model with 40 x 3G-SDI inputs. All models include full standards conversion on every SDI input, 4 ATEM advanced chroma keyers per M/E row, a DVE per M/E row, media players, larger media pool and much more. Plus the built in Fairlight audio mixer includes a compressor, limiter, 6 band parametric EQ and expander on each input. The free ATEM Software Control is included, or you can add a 1 M/E, 2 M/E or 4 M/E ATEM Advanced Panel.

These new switchers are designed as a professional upgrade for ATEM Mini customers who need to expand, or for large broadcasters who want to upgrade their studios to get a modern switcher.

Plus at the show we also introduced 2 new ATEM control panels and one is a 30 button version of the 2 M/E Advanced Panel and a 40 button version of the 2 M/E Advanced Panel. The 2 M/E panel can be used to select between up to 4 separate M/E rows on a switcher so it’s a really compact design, but still able to handle a 4 M/E switcher. With models that include more buttons, I think they will be a good solution for use with the new 2 M/E and 4 M/E Constellation HD switchers.
