SMT Aids NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament With Data Graphics and Real-Time Clock-and-Score System

SMT is again providing the timing and scoring system and data-infused graphics forall 67 televised games of the 2023 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship.

SMT’s technology synchronizes clock, score, and statistics from the games and feeds the data in real-time to SMT’s ticker system and the tournament graphics package. SMT’s SportsCG clock-and-score system captures clock data from scoreboards during the games, while its HoopStat in-game statistics and scoring system provides live statistics for CBS Sports and Turner Sports broadcasters and production crew. SMT’s upper ticker graphic informs viewers about upcoming games while its lower ticker displays scores and game notes.

For the 24th year, SMT production teams are stationed at every venue, with spotters sitting courtside and communicating stats such as shots, steals, assists, rebounds, turnovers and fouls to SMT inputters who update the box score used by commentators to relay key moments of the game, giving fans a deeper understanding of the tournament’s storylines.

New this year is SMT’s shot chart graphic that incorporates SMT data and shot plotting from the NCAA official stats system to display an at-a-glance look at where teams’ and players’ strengths and weaknesses are in the paint, at the rim, around the 3-point arc or anywhere on the court. To provide flexibility for producers, the shot chart graphic can be displayed as a full screen or side slab.

SMT’s Durham, N.C.-based Data Operations Center serves as the centralized hub where scores and statistics from each game are integrated in real-time to build statistical graphics that can be displayed instantly on-screen. The center accesses the live data to monitor every game, statistic and clock connection during the tournament, as well as historical information from previous games.
