BetCasts to Players Only: A Deeper Look at Alternate Game Presentations From Regional Sports Networks

Reps from Bally Sports Detroit, NBC Sports Chicago, and Sportradar share their most successful alternate broadcasts

On October 1, ESPN will venture into another chapter of the alternate live broadcast when it streams Toy Story Funday Football, a kids-focused alternate presentation of  the NFL International Series game between the Atlanta Falcons (Disney+, ESPN+, NFL+). From Prime Video’s Dude Perfect companion broadcasts during Thursday Night Football to ESPN’s CFP Megacast and the Sports-Emmy-winning ManningCast, alternate coverage options of the live game are all of the rage in live sports production today.

And the innovation isn’t happening just at national broadcasters. Regional sports networks across the country are producing captivating alternative broadcasts of live games in an effort to draw new demographics to their properties.

In this panel discussion, learn more about how and why key RSN leaders came to produce their flavors of the “alt-cast.” Jeff Byle, VP and Executive Producer at Bally Sports Detroit breaks down the “Players Only” broadcast that it brought to coverage of the Detroit Tigers; John Schippman, VP of Sports Content at NBCUniversal Local Chicago shares the BetCast it produces around Chicago Bulls games; and Patrick Murphy, Broadcast Sales Director for Sportradar offers a look at the technologies powering these – often-times – data-filled shows. The conversation is moderated by SVG’s Senior Editor Kristian Hernández.
