The SVG and SVGE editorial teams were out in full force at NAB 2024, covering the biggest sports-technology news and delivering daily SportsTechBuzz at NAB 2024 roundups. Here is a look at the news from exhibitors in South Hall.

EVS (Booth SU4015) is an NAB Show must-stop for attendees in sports-content creation, and, at this year’s edition, the company is unveiling a licensing system for its flagship server XT-VIA with three distinct modes: Multicam, Spotlight, and Spotbox. The goal is to make it easy for clients to easily scale up or down according to production needs. And AI plays a big role in products and services, including generating slow-motion replays from any camera on a production via XtraMotion. That service is being demonstrated, along with other AI-driven effects like deblurring, auto-cropping, and shallow depth of field. For attendees looking to easily move from SDI to IP, the Strada routing solution serves as a drop-in replacement for SDI routers and is built on an IP backbone for smooth transition to IP, and Neuron View enhances Neuron’s comprehensive features, with flexible, high-quality scaling and low-latency multiviewer. Its web interface allows full customization, catering to the specific needs of demanding live-production environments.

Blackmagic (Booth SL5005) is getting into the video-replay business with Blackmagic Replay. It uses multiple HyperDecks to record into shared storage, and DaVinci Resolve is connected to the same shared storage as a powerful playback engine. However, the company says, the true power comes from having DaVinci Resolve handle the playback, making it an extremely powerful editor with multi-user collaboration features as well as color correction, visual effects, and audio postproduction. A hardware control panel available in May combines features for both replay and multicam editing, allowing the same operator to work on replays while loading them into the timeline via the keyboard’s editing features. The panel can connect via USB or Bluetooth, and the large internal battery lasts for hours. In addition, a new range of converters with mini and rack-mount models supports Ultra HD using 10G Ethernet. Designed to integrate SDI equipment into IP broadcast systems for broadcast, live production, and AV, the new Blackmagic 2110 IP converters conform to SMPTE ST 2110 standard for IP video.

Live media is a key area of R&D investment for Evertz (Booth SU2027). Previewing new products and services for live production at a press conference on Saturday, Senior Director, International Business Development, Mo Goyal said, “We started with DreamCatcher, and then we expanded that to BRAVO Studio for production. Now with Studer [acquired by Evertz in 2021], we have both video and audio, which we can build because [live] is an area where we can offer some new insights.” He highlighted new data-driven co-pilots for Evertz’s DreamCatcher BRAVO Studio virtual-production-control suite: Metadata and Highlight Factory provide the ability to automatically create clips, playlists, and stories using AI with large language models and deep machine-learning technology. The new DreamCatcher DC-ONE platforms (DC-ONE-SE and DC-ONE-LX) for entry level and mid-tier replay applications were also discussed.

Maxon (Booth SL10139, SL4104) is showcasing creativity-boosting upgrades and tools in the Spring 2024 release of Maxon One, including Cinema 4D Particles, NRP rendering in Redshift, and Red Giant Geo. Maxon’s training team will be giving demos of the company’s latest tools and features. Artists will be presenting on a range of topics, including using C4D with Unreal Engine for games, the art of product visualization, creating a sci-fi short with C4D, and using ZBrush to Unreal workflows for toy commercials.

LucidLink (Booth SL2080) has launched a new Adobe After Effects panel on its storage-collaboration platform. This new integration within Adobe’s motion-design platform allows users to pin compositions directly within After Effects for maximum playback performance. According to Matt Schneider, director, product marketing, LucidLink, the new After Effects panel, coupled with LucidLink’s Adobe Premiere Pro panel (launched at Adobe MAX 2023), significantly speeds workflows for LucidLink/Adobe users. Creative artists and designers can now proactively cache just the media needed in their composition directly within the application, creating a faster, more efficient, and seamless experience within Adobe After Effects. Users can pin and unpin composition content, search for both clips and compositions, load footage directly into the viewer, access clip metadata, and copy LucidLink links, all from the LucidLink panel.

Seagate (Booth SL4125) is showcasing its full range of cost-effective and secure data-storage solutions providing support for all aspects of media workflow. The Exos systems offer mass-capacity solutions with storage arrays and feature hard drives powered by such technologies as the new Mozaic 3+, being seen here for the first time at an international trade show. Mozaic3+ incorporates Seagate’s implementation of HAMR to deliver mass-capacity storage of 3 TB per disc and more. The Seagate Lyve suite of products are also on display, including Lyve Mobile, which allows import from any cloud to multiple locations, and Lyve Cloud, which acts as a secure repository for content. Other products include LaCie with the Rugged product line, including the Rugged Mini SS, and Thunderbolt 3 desktop storage solutions and enterprise drives.

One of the highlights at Vizrt (Booth SL5061) is Viz Libero Go, a specially created software and hardware bundle for compact, flexible “on the go” sports productions without compromising analysis quality. The bundle combines the power of leading sports-analysis tool Viz Libero with AI, NDI, and Viz 3Play relay in a compact HP workstation and puts essential analysis tools at the user’s fingertips. The package also comes with more than 70 annotation tools, plus overlay and on-field graphics and tracking and measurement tools with monetization options through virtual advertising. Vizrt is hosting a live sports-experience show every hour at NAB 2024, demonstrating its solutions in real time.

Moments Lab (Booth SL2113), formerly Newsbridge, is exhibiting its multimodal AI, designed to meet the challenges faced by broadcasters by automatically undertaking video indexing, sequences in natural languages and enabling content professionals to focus on being creative. XT-1.5 automatically analyses live streams and archives, generating descriptions of video content the way a human would. New for NAB 2024 are Sound Bites, whereby MXT-1.5 pinpoints soundbites in your video; Editorial Sequences, which automatically groups all shots into thematic sequences; and Accuracy Revolution, promising 87.5% accuracy in describing each scene of a video. The platform is used worldwide by TV networks, sports rightsholders, production companies, journalists, producers, and archivists to scale content creation workflows and generate new revenue streams. This can be in relation to accessing live recordings, clipping highlights, researching story angles, content retrieval, or content showcasing and licensing. The company rebranded in March 2024 to better reflect its growing client base.

RT Software (Booth SL5088) is displaying its full range of real-time graphics solutions for news, sports, entertainment, and channel branding. It’s providing a sneak peek at the next release in the Swift suite of graphics editors. A new web-based editor will “complement the Swift Live web-based operator interface,” say Commercial Director Mike Fredriksen. RT Software’s products include editors/CG, sports telestrator, election and newsroom graphics, augmented reality, and virtual studios with control interfaces for PC or browser. An enhancement to Tactic v7.1, its established sports-analysis telestrator, adds Team ID, allowing it to automatically identify the two teams, and Slow-Mo, a replay feature to sit alongside the record-to-disc function. Customers include BBC, Sky News, and TNT Sports. Says Fredriksen, “We are having a very successful NAB. It has been great to connect with people and to show them what we have and what we are developing.”

As part of Ross Video’s (Booth SL2005) 50th-anniversary celebrations, the company has a switcher museum in its booth. Taking pride of place is the RVS 16-4, the first switcher built by company founder John Ross. The 1MLE switcher in the 2RU chassis was “unheard of” when it launched in 1974, the company says. Some 40 years later, Ross is using NAB 2024 to introduce Carbonite Code, a software-based production switcher with NDI I/O, providing 30 NDI inputs, 6 NDI outputs, plus 3 MEs and 6 keyers per ME for 18 DVEs in total.

Hitomi (Booth SL5080) specializes in streamlining the lineup process of lip synchronization, latency coherence, and channel identification. At NAB 2024, it is offering live demonstrations of its new 2110 version of Matchbox and the Matchbox Glass app, a product designed to quickly solve lip-sync, coherence, line-identification, and audio-level–monitoring problems. Live demos of Matchbox are being used to measure latency and lip sync on IP networks. Says Director Russell Johnson, “What makes this unique is that it is aimed squarely at the live-production world. Its real value is that Matchbox provides scientific proof for the timing. You don’t need to guess it.” Matchbox has been deployed in many major sports events, Johnson notes, from rugby, women’s football, and sailing to the MTV Europe Music Awards and recent elections. “Broadcasting companies have come to rely on the speed and accuracy from the MatchBox range when broadcasting live events.”

Brainstorm (Booth SL4097) has been announced as the initial technical partner of XD Motion. At NAB 2024, the two companies are offering a demo showcasing the new dual-GPU capabilities of Brainstorm’s InfinitySet virtual-set solution and XD Motion’s Arcam robotic cameras. The Arcam 10 and Arcam 20 are being used with the newly released IOBOT 1.5 broadcasting-automation tool. In the demonstration, a mixed environment combines a chroma screen and a large LED volume to create a broadcast show — including in-context AR motion graphics, fully immersive talent tele-transport, and multi-background content — with the presenter controlling the show. The two Arcam robotics are synchronised to enable highly realistic virtual-talent integration.

For Fonn Group (Booth SL2124), a central focus at NAB 2024 is on its cloud-based Mimir video-collaboration and -production tool for professionals. Demonstrations highlight for the first time Mimir’s new Semantic Search capability, which allows users to search their media assets and have results returned on the “meaning” of the question, not its exact wording. The approach uses “Gen AI,” says VP, Product Marketing, Andre Torsvik, “and, in doing so, does not generate content; it finds what you have and makes intelligent suggestions. AI describes it, embeds it, and understands the context of the clip. It adds flexibility for the user and frees up editors to be more creative.” Mimir has been used by Formula E and the Philadelphia Eagles amongst other sports clients. Also being shown, Dina is a story-centric newsroom rundown and multiplatform publishing tool running in the browser, built on true cloud-native web technologies. The Fonn Group comprises the Mimir, Mediability, Dina, and Kunnusta brands. The latest addition to the Fonn Group family is everviz, which offers data visualisation and engaging storytelling with charts.

Dizplai (Booth SL4086) is responding to the growth in digital-first live programming in sports and the increasing amount of content created before, during and after games, says Commercial Director Peter Cassidy. He cites new cricket format The Hundred, which the ECB (English Cricket Board) opted to show not on linear TV but on YouTube and TikTok. Production company Little Dot and Dizplai produced coverage of the competition’s draft, with Dizplai co-designing a set of dynamic graphics and implementing a custom workflow on the Dizplai platform for use by the production team. “It changes the requirement in terms of expectation for engagement and what the graphics look like and that’s where we come into our own,” says Cassidy. “Similarly, football [soccer] clubs are doing more and more live pregame, adding graphics to press conferences and training and making that content more interactive. That whole trend is what we are riding at the moment.”

Christy Media (Booth SL3085) is showcasing its range of recruitment services at NAB 2024. Christy provides both contract and permanent solutions from graduate to senior management and C-suite and works with all aspects of the broadcast and media industry, including broadcasters, live-production and OB-facilities providers, distributors, OTT/VOD platforms, manufacturers, vendors, and system integrators. Operations Director Tilly Magill notes that sales and business development and engineering are areas with vacancies, with clients particularly keen to find software developers with AI experience.

After acquiring Curio AI in January, Wasabi Technologies (Booth SL8117) is launching what it calls “the industry’s first AI-enabled intelligent media storage.” Dubbed Wasabi AiR, the new platform combines Wasabi’s high-performance, low-cost object storage with Curio’s advanced AI metadata auto-tagging and multilingual searchable speech-to-text transcription. Video files uploaded to Wasabi AiR are immediately analyzed, and a second-by-second metadata index is created, enabling users to quickly find what they are looking for. According to President/CEO/Co-Founder David Friend, Wasabi AiR (which comes at no additional charge for users) greatly reduces the cost of metadata creation; customers pay only for the storage. Video archives currently stored on tape can be uploaded to Wasabi AiR storage, and formerly “dead” content can become a new source of revenue and user engagement.”

In Las Vegas, AJA (Booth SL3065) is showcasing ColorBox, a portable converter for color-managed workflows that supports low latency, in-line HDR/SDR algorithmic, and LUT color transforms for live production, live event, in-studio, and on-set applications. Visitors will also see the company’s FS-HDR HDR/WCG converter and frame synchronizer and the AJA HDR image analyzer 12G HDR monitoring and analysis solution. Key products on exhibit include the AJA KONA X and KONA 5, Io X3 and Io 4K Plus, and T-TAP Pro. AJA also is introducing a Stream Deck plug-in for its compact HELO PlusH.264 streaming and recording device. The software allows streamers to use the popular Elgato Stream Deck desktop controller for simple, immediate hardware-based control of HELO Plus.

Cobalt Digital (Booth SU4027) is furthering its work in the openGear initiative with the release of two new form-factor cards: ARIA OG-AUD4-DANTE and INDIGO OG-2110-BIDI4-GATEWAY. The former is a quad-channel unit (also available as a dual-channel version) with up to 12G Dante/AES/MADI/embed and de-embed functions with frame-sync capabilities. The latter is a quad-channel bidirectional ST 2110 gateway offering four independent processing paths on a single openGear card or 40 independent processing paths on a single openGear frame. The company is also offering the SMPTE ST 2110 interface as an add-on to Cobalt’s 9905-MPx or 9904-UDX-4K popular openGear processing cards with the simple addition of the Indigo 2110-DC-01 daughter-card option and ST 2110 input option on its Pacific 9992-ENC encoder with the addition of the Indigo 2110-DC-02 daughter-card option.

Evertz (Booth SU2027) is staying busy on the show floor with a handful of product releases and announcements. Leading off is DreamCatcher BRAVO Studio, a complete production platform suitable for customers in the entertainment, sports, and corporate space and combines the independent elements required for high–quality, broadcast–ready live production into a suite of tools accessible through Evertz’s VUE interface. In addition, the company’s NEXX is a compact processing-capable routing platform for SD/HD/3G/6G/12G-SDI for venues, arenas, and stadiums. For NAB 2024, NEXX has been expanded with the addition of two new processing modules: NEXX-670 to enable high-density frame synchronization, up/down/crossconversion, IP gateways, and advanced multiviewers; and NEXX-SCORPION to support four dual-slot SCORPION modular I/O (MIO)s and providing new interface support for the NEXX.

With the aim of reducing the complexity of live production workflows, arkona (Booth SU6037) has unveiled BLADE//master, an intuitive and scalable software-based service included for free with the company’s BLADE//runner suite of live-broadcast-production hardware and software tools for ease of control and orchestration. Making its NAB Show debut, BLADE//master is intended to simplify integration of the BLADE//runner ecosystem into legacy broadcast-control systems by exposing a customisable subset of its tools as an Ember+ parameter tree, a protocol that allows devices to be remotely controlled via the network. In addition, the company is introducing AMIX, an audio mixer available as an option on its IP Gateway and Router (IPGR) software application. AMIX provides up to 64 mono and 64 stereo mix instances, as well as the ability to easily create mix-minus (N-1) feeds. It can replace submixers for any size production while simultaneously performing IP and SDI video processing, such as routing, colour correction, and HDR-SDR colour-space conversion. Taking it further, arkona is cranking up BLADE//runner’s audio capabilities to an even higher level by making a new IP Audio Engine (IPA) application comprising a dedicated audio mixer and DSP available on the AT300 PAC. With a total capacity of 16,384 mono audio inputs and 12,288 outputs, IPA offers compression and multiband equalisers with true peak monitoring and loudness metering in addition to mono, stereo, and multichannel mixes.

Quantum (Booth SL5083) has added advanced file-service technology to its Myriad and StorNext platforms to offer server-message-block–based (SMB) cross-platform file service. The technology — part of a broad partnership with Tuxera that will feature common technology building blocks across StorNext and Myriad — provides users with high-performance collaborative storage and fast network file service together on the same platform. Quantum is also showcasing its new ActiveScale Z200 all-flash object storage, which helps customers accelerate mission-critical AI pipelines and massive data workflows. This new solution extends Quantum’s all-flash portfolio beyond Quantum Myriad and StorNext file-system solutions to address S3-native use cases.

Tinkerlist (Booth SU5062) is demonstrating its cloud-based script and rundown platform CUEZ. Described as a user-friendly, gallery-agnostic newsroom system, CUEZ allows journalists and creatives to upload videos, graphics, story ideas, and textual information to a single, unified platform. According to the company, the platform’s hybrid capability allows an easy transition between on-premises and cloud-based work, making it ideal for diverse broadcasting needs and unforeseen circumstances. Features specifically for live coverage of sport include a shared link that can be made available to rightsholders that need access to view — but not edit — an up-to-date rundown. Meanwhile, the Tinkerlist brand is being phased out, with the company set to be known as CUEZ.

Ross Video (Booth SL2005) has launched a striking studio robotics camera that “that redefines flexibility, creativity, and practicality in studio settings,” according to the company. Branded Artimo, the camera offers programmable moving shots without the limitations of fixed rails, markers, or the need for a perfectly smooth studio floor. Artimo’s elevation system enables a wide range of camera heights, from below the desk to above head height, and can support a full payload: broadcast cameras, lenses, teleprompters, talent monitors. “With traditional broadcast studios changing, increasing use of LEDs, more versatility from studios, and the need to have more on-air movement to engage and entertain the audience,” says Karen Walker, VP, camera motion systems, “we designed Artimo.”

Backlight (Booth SL4114) has introduced native integrations between its product lines that will allow more-efficient preparation and distribution of video, bridging complementary work streams within the sports-video–production pipeline. The company’s iconic MAM system is showing integrations with Zype, ftrack, and Wildmoka Clip Studio. The new iconik and Zype connector allows users to combine media storage, collaboration, and review with streaming and OTT workflows. The integration between ftrack and iconik will connect ftrack’s project management and production tracking with iconik’s flexible media management and collaboration. And integration between iconik and Wildmoka Clip Studio enables users to access iconik’s MAM platform from within Wildmoka’s production and distribution platform. Backlight recently published a case study describing how The Goodwood Group used iconik and Wildmoka integration for the Festival of Sport and Revival events.

Aiming to make a splash, NETGEAR (Booth SU3107) is presenting its M4350 series of network switches to offer performance, reliability, and flexibility for handling SMPTE ST 2110 and NDI protocols and other technologies essential to modem broadcasting. One major feature is synchronization and interoperability of professional media over IP networks. Embracing SMPTE ST 2110 on two models, NETGEAR’s M4350 switches enable broadcasters to build flexible, future-proof infrastructures that support the transition from traditional baseband to IP-based workflows seamlessly and at a fraction of the cost.

Spectra Logic (Booth SL3099) has unveiled Spectra Cube, a cloud-centric tape library offering up to 30 PB of native capacity, with a maximum compressed capacity of 75 PB. According to CTO David Heller and SVP, Business Development, Hossein ZiaShakeri, Spectra Cube can be quickly deployed, dynamically scaled, and easily serviced without tools or downtime. Management of the new system is provided by newly introduced LumOS library-management software, an interface that allows secure local and remote management and monitoring, and an optional assisted self-maintenance model for rapid component replacement without the need for service personnel. The Spectra Cube library fully supports modern backup and archive applications via integration of Spectra BlackPearl file- and object-storage systems to create highly cost-effective on-premises or hybrid cloud object-based tape tiers. Amazon S3 and Amazon S3 Glacier API access is fully supported.

IHSE (Booth SL5115) has again partnered with longtime partner Fraunhofer IIS to develop a next-generation KVM system based on the high-performance JPEG XS codec. JPEG XS allows high-resolution and high-quality video data to be transferred over standard Ethernet or other wired connections with limited computing resources. According to Marketing Manager Dan Holland, using Fraunhofer’s JPEG XS SDK and IHSE’s JPEG XS IP core for field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), ultra-low-latency broadcast, in-house, and gaming-video routes can be realized with predictive and precise rate control. Th partnership will enable the library to be integrated into IHSE’s Draco Con App, a software-based KVM solution that enables users to access an IHSE KVM network via IP protocol from a standard, network-connected PC.

Chyron (Booth SL2238) is focused on updates and enhancements in version 4.10 of PRIME graphics playout platform. The latest version simplifies operation while enabling greater control over the types of data displayed in live-to-air graphics. New dynamic-data functionality allows playout operators to control not just the display of real-time data in a graphic but the data source and also the actions the data will trigger. Control panels in PRIME can now be configured by designers to provide access to specific parameters and give playout operators just the right amount of control and flexibility. Those same control panels are available when PRIME integrates with Chyron’s Click Effects venue controller. Calling up PRIME graphics with a single button click, operators at the venue can manipulate the graphics they’re going to play out just as a live broadcast operator would. The company is also previewing and seeking user input for the upcoming PRIME 5.0 release, which will support two 4K inputs and two 4K outputs, as well as offer tighter integration with Adobe Photoshop and After Effects.

Matrox Video (Booth SL5073) has unveiled the latest release of the Matrox Monarch EDGE SDI encoders and decoders. Now supporting such ancillary data as VANC and SCTE messaging, Monarch EDGE tightly integrates into distribution platforms from GlobalM, Techex, and others. Matrox is also showing off the latest additions to the DSX and LE family of ST 2110 NIC cards, designed for custom, high-resolution applications. Also featured are product demos and customer stories illustrating how the company helps broadcasters, live-event producers, developers, and manufacturers implement and improve IP- and IT-based media workflows.

OpenDrives Director, Technical Enablement, Jason Matousek

OpenDrives (Booth SL8125) has introduced its Atlas platform and business model, which shifts the company’s software-defined storage platform from traditional storage-system sizing to a workflow-centric perspective. According to Director, Technical Enablement, Jason Matousek, OpenDrives is moving away from a “one-size-fits-all” mindset in favor of “workflow-configured storage solutions.” The company expects this new model to enable efficient, agile, and high-performance data management configured to unique creative workflows rather than traditional predetermined hardware/software packages.

To promote creative storytelling, Dell Technologies (Booth SL8065) is showcasing recent updates to its lineup of storage, servers, networking, workstations, and display solutions and also highlighting new partnerships. The new PowerScale storage node, the F210, is a compact 1RU 4-drive NVMe model that now has 2X the performance and 2X the capacity of its predecessor, the F200. Dell’s highest-performance density storage product, the new PowerScale F710 node, packs 10 NVMe drives into the same 1RU footprint and features dual Intel Xeon Sapphire Rapids CPUs with DDR5 RAM and Gen 5 PCIe slots to the NVIDIA ConnectX-6 NIC. Also on display are IT infrastructure and services, including Precision workstations, color-accurate 4K displays, and GPU-accelerated servers.

EditShare VP, Business Development, Lee Griffin

EditShare (Booth SL8087) has teamed up with Atomos to bring camera-to-cloud workflows to its MediaSilo video collaboration platform. MediaSilo will be integrated with Atomos’s range of cloud-connected camera-mounted monitor-recorders, which can be attached to virtually any HDMI or SDI camera source. VP, Business Development, Lee Griffin says that, with the new workflow, editors can begin working on media instantly instead of waiting for hard drives or delayed file transfers. Also, EditShare’s new EFS NVMe fileshare system harnesses the power and speed of NVMe (Non-Volatile Memory Express) to provide three times more the bandwidth and throughput of traditional SSD storage solutions.

According to CEO Dave Zabrowski, this approach improves the efficiency, accuracy, and impact of media-asset searches compared with legacy solutions that rely on entered metadata. In contrast to traditional MAM systems, ICE acts as an “AI media-content librarian” by examining, understanding, and cataloging every file within its view, regardless of the existence of traditional metadata. Powered by a simple conversational interface that can be spoken to directly, ICE enables users to find and retrieve media files through natural-language requests.

Scale Logic’s (Booth SL7113) new CaraOne platform is generating plenty of interest from broadcasters and content creators, according to VP, Business Development, Drew Wanstall. A secure, on-premises AI Media Content Discovery Engine appliance, Cara One was created to intelligently understand the media context, eliminating the requirement for extensive tagging and metadata input — resulting in higher efficiency for media organizations. Wanstall describes CaraOne as a “virtual assistant” that understands an organization’s media and helps users find exactly what they’re looking for based on concepts, emotions, and specific statements within interviews.

Studio Network Solutions (Booth SL7065) is showcasing updates to SNS’s EVO Suite of software tools included with EVO shared storage. The updates to workflow tools include new collaboration features for ShareBrowser MAM system, additional cloud storage integrations, and enhanced transcoding capabilities. Besides the software tools, EVO shared storage comprises featuring ShareBrowser MAM, Slingshot transcoding and automations engine, and Nomad for remote editing. According to Director, Marketing, Melanie Ciotti, updates to the EVO Suite are expected to begin rolling out on selected new systems by the end the year.
