2024 Sports Emmys: ESPN Takes Home Most Statues With Eight; CBS’s Super Bowl LVIII Shines With Three Wins, Including Outstanding Live Special

ESPN led all network groups with eight wins at last night’s Sports Emmy Awards, while CBS Sports and TNT Sports took home six and five trophies, respectively. CBS’s coverage of Super Bowl LVIII in Las Vegas and ESPN’s presentation of Toy Story Funday Football led all individual programs with three Emmys apiece. In the key categories, CBS won Outstanding Live Special for Super Bowl LVIII, ESPN’s Monday Night Football with Peyton & Eli was named Outstanding Live Series, and FOX’s ALCS broadcasts of the Astros-Rangers series won for Outstanding Playoff Coverage.

Among the 46 categories were key technical awards, including Outstanding Technical Team – Event going to CBS Sports for its efforts in Las Vegas and Outstanding Technical Team – Studio going to ESPN for its work at the 2023 NFL Draft in Kansas City. The prestigious George Wensel Technical Achievement Award went to ESPN for its DragonFly Tech on Toy Story Funday Football. In addition, FOX Sports also picked up a win for Outstanding Audio/Sound – Live for its NASCAR coverage.

Lead Producer of NFL on CBS, Jim Rikhoff, accepts the night’s final award for Outstanding Live Special.

Other network groups with multiple wins included YouTube with four, FOX Sports with three and two apiece for NBC Sports, HBO, NFL Network, Apple TV+, Golf Channel, and Telemundo Deportes.

On the Outstanding Studio Show front, ESPN’s College GameDay won in the Weekly category, MLB Network’s MLB Tonight in the Daily, and TNT’s Inside the NBA: Playoffs in the Limited Run. In addition, Telemundo was awarded Outstanding Studio Show in Spanish for its 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup programming.

Prime Video won another statute for Outstanding Interactive Experience – Event Coverage for their event coverage optionality/customization on Thursday Night Football. Meanwhile, MSG Network’s Dreamcaster won for Outstanding Digital Innovation.

CBS Sports’ EVP, Ops and Engineering, Patty Power, receives the award for Outstanding Technical Team – Event.

ESPN continued their winning ways with Outstanding Studio or Production Design/Art Direction and Outstanding Graphic Design – Event Show for their reproduction of Andy’s Room. Super League: The War for Football from Apple TV+, Words + Pictures, and All Rise Films earned Outstanding Graphic Design – Specialty.

During the ceremony at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Frederick P. Rose Hall in New York City on Tuesday, legendary sportscaster and three-time Emmy Award-winner James Brown was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award by former CBS Sports Chairman Sean McManus for his historic career. In addition, ESPN’s SportsCenter anchor Elle Duncan and Dana M. Johnson, Coca-Cola’s Senior Director of Frontline Strategy and Stewardship, Colleges and Universities, announced the winner of the $40,000 Coca-Cola HBCU Sports Production Grant – Florida A&M University’s “Field Trip.” Jonathan David, Class of ‘24 accepted on behalf of the student production team which also included Germanie Bozeman, Tristian Hutton, Darnell Walker-Jones, and Jalon Howard, and advisor Edward Thomas.

Beyond Sports Co-Founder and CTO Nicolaas Westerhof highlighted their work with ESPN to win the George Wensel Technical Achievement Award.
