XOS Technologies taps Video Editing Solution for NASCAR Pit Crews

XOS Technologies, has launched the XOS Pit Coach Station, a digital video-editing solution designed for motorsports in which pit stops are recorded from multiple camera angles and can be measured to improve stoppage time. Initial NASCAR teams to purchase the Pit Coach Station during the preseason are Richard Childress Racing (RCR) Ginn Racing, Chip Ganassi Racing, and Michael Waltrip Racing.

What we have done with the XOS Pit Coach Station is that we have eliminated the need for the VHS deck, said Jason Murphy, XOS Motorsports Product Marketing Manager. NASCAR teams have what is called a boom cam and that feed from the camera previously would be feed into a VHS deck located on the pit box right next to where the car pulls into pit.

Now the feed from the boom cam goes directly into a laptop computer and gets recorded in the hard drive of a computer, said Murphy. The Pit Crew Coach has the option to view pit stops in full-screen mode on a laptop or on a larger plasma screen for playback. Videos can be viewed in real time, slow motion and smooth reverse.

The Pit Crew Coach station can measure certain actions on the pit stop such as the total time of the stop. It is up to pit crew chief in terms of what they want to measure, said Murphy.

“It allows for quick review at the track and quick post-race breakdown of all pit stops. We can now see every movement a crew member makes which allows us to make adjustments to shave crucial fractions of seconds off of our pit stop times.” said Corinne Mauldin, RCR pit coach.

This project for has been in the works since the last Daytona 500. Some executives went to the Daytona 500 last year and talked to a number of pit crew coaches, said Murphy.
We went back to our lab and delivered a product the market wanted.

The XOS Pit Coach Station can be seen in the pit crews of Richard Childress Racing cars
. They include the No. 29 Shell Chevrolet driven by Kevin Harvick, the No. 31 Cingular Chevrolet driven by Jeff Burton, and the No. 07 Jack Daniels Chevrolet driven by Clint Bowyer.

The other NASCAR Drivers to first use the system are Ginn racing stars Mark Martin, Sterling Marlin, and Joe Nemecheck, as well as David Stremme of Chip Ganassi racing, and Michael Waltrip.
XOS is also working with Waltrip Raceworld a race shop that will encompass more than 130,000 square feet and will span 11.5 acres in
