Vendors Introduce a Wide Variety of Products at AES NY 2017

Integration, enhanced workflow, wireless capability, small size mark the new offerings

Although vendors offer preshow previews of products they’re exhibiting, there are often surprises at the show. Here are a some of the new products displayed at AES NY 2017.

Avid announced a new version of EUCON software. Powered by Avid’s MediaCentral platform, it offers several new features and workflow enhancements. As an open-software protocol, EUCON enables tight integration between Avid control surfaces and Pro Tools, Avid plug-ins, Avid Alliance Partner plug-ins, and third-party digital audio workstations (DAWs). EUCON 3.7 delivers new integrated features and workflow enhancements between Pro Tools software and Pro Tools | S6, Pro Tools | S3, Pro Tools | Dock, Pro Tools | Control, and Artist Series. For example, users can cycle through plug-ins faster on Pro Tools | S6 with EQ and DYN cycling, and the VCA Spill feature from Pro Tools | Control provides a faster way of working with multiple VCA-controlled tracks. EUCON 3.7 is available now and is a free update to all customers with Pro Tools | S3,

DPA Microphones introduced its CORE microphone amplifier technology. Designed for miniature lavalier and headset mics, it minimizes distortion and increases dynamic range of the company’s d:screet and d:fine lines. For example, the dynamic range of the d:screet 4061 and the d:fine 4066 has been increased by 14 dB at 1% THD. Located in the capsule of the miniature mics, CORE is currently available in the d:screet 4060, d:screet 4061, d:fine 4066, and d:fine 4088. Microphones purchased with the new technology will come in CORE packaging and will have a blue label near the serial number on the cable to differentiate them from the original versions. The remaining d:screet and d:fine microphones and full range of color options will be available with CORE technology in early 2018.

Genelec’s The Ones three-way coaxial monitors

Genelec launched The Ones, the world’s smallest three-way coaxial monitors, to create a complete compact coaxial range. The 8341 and 8331 are housed in enclosures no larger than a traditional two-way Genelec 8040 or 8030. Innovations include a motor assembly in which the midrange and the tweeter share the compact magnet system, reducing size and weight with no reduction in response. The unique midrange coaxial driver cone is now composed of concentric sections, optimizing midrange linearity — as does the DCW, which covers the entire front face of the enclosure. Though small, the 8341 and 8331 each incorporate three stages of dedicated Class D amplification, developed in-house by Genelec and including eco-friendly Intelligent Signal Sensing (ISS) energy-saving technology.

Sony DWT-B03R digital wireless bodypack transmitter

Sony Electronics’ Pro Audio Division demonstrated prototypes of three Hi-Resolution microphones. Designed for professional-studio and home recording applications, the new Hi-Res microphones are capable of extended frequency response to 50 kHz. One, the C-100 side-address mic, is optimized for vocal use; the two end-address models (the cardioid ECM-100U and the omnidirectional ECM-100N) are ideal for instruments. The new mics expand Sony’s Hi-Resolution Audio line. The company also previewed the next generation of DWX digital wireless, Sony’s third-generation DWX series, which delivers ultra-low audio latency of 1.2-ms with extended bandwidth and high-density multichannel operation. A high-dynamic-range RF circuit and four-diversity-antenna configuration ensure reliable operation, and the system supports Dante digital AoIP networking technology. The new DWX components include the smaller and lightweight DWT-B03R digital wireless bodypack transmitter, DWR-R03D digital wireless rack-mount receiver, the BC-DWX1 battery charger, and the ECM-77LM miniature, omnidirectional electret condenser microphone.
