SVG SportsTech On Demand: Dolby's Tom Lattie on Ensuring Consistent Picture Quality in UHD and HDR

In an effort to keep the broadcast-technology community informed this spring, throughout April, SVG is hosting a series of SportsTech On Demand video interviews with executives from the industry’s top technology vendors discussing their latest product releases and company news. Our Ken Kerschbaumer sat down with Tom Lattie, senior director of operator sales, North America, Dolby, about the company’s efforts.

Ultra-High Definition and High Dynamic Range are now standard features on mainstream televisions resulting in a significant number of consumers watching live sports on displays that have higher resolution and color capabilities than the original production. During playback, the program is adapted to the display’s capabilities by the set-top box or in the television. While resolution scaling is relatively straight forward and widely accepted, there are varied approaches for stretching SDR images on an HDR capable display leading to an inconsistent consumer experience. In conjunction with broadcasters, Dolby is researching workflows for mapping SDR productions into Dolby Vision as a method for ensuring creative intent is consistently delivered to viewers with UHD/HDR televisions.
